I'll take Fluke! LOL
Leave it up to me to confuse the medical field. Maybe it's payback. Just kidding. No I'm not. LOL

IThey did look for the comparison factor and found I was on nothing different each time that may have caused it or didn't cause on. They are baffled.

I laughed at my doc one time (I never laugh at my docs office, so...). We sat down with my med list and he says "Oh you're allergic to Morphine...again!" I thought that was funny. It lightened up my spirit for a couple of minutes.

Now it is a standing joke when I get in an ambulance (there are three companies that work in my area -so different people each time) "How 'bout tonight? Allergic or not?
Of course they never give me Morphine anymore, but I get a kick out of that.

I'm a phenomenon...no I like "Fluke" better.

Yes, I believe I was getting "other help" as well. I always have that help. Every minute of every day.

Thank you for your wonderful, insightful answers and all the good you do here for everyone. UR grrreaaaat!

I meant "allergies" as far as any medication goes.  A LOT of people confuse intolerance to meds with allergies.  A lot of people can not tolerate certain meds for one reason or another...and will cause them some side effects...but they do not actually have an allergy to that medication.

What you describe IS somewhat unusal.  In most cases of anaphylaxis....any exposure to that med will cause the life-threatening reaction.  Sometimes the SEVERITY of that reaction can vary a bit....but generally speaking....usually any exposure to a med or trigger that causes anaphylactic shock for someone will cause it time and time again.  If you were on any type of medication, like an anti-histamine, steroid, etc...it may have lessened your reaction.  Either that...or someone was truly looking out for you.  ;0)  You got lucky.

Med allergies CAN be fleeting....and they can improve/worsen in severity over time.  Usually, one never finds out...b/c once the allergy is discovered....the med and any derivativie is obviously avoided.

But, generally...the term "allergy" tends to be over-used bigtime when dealing with meds.  Someone will take a Percocet, and it causes nausea for that person...so they label it as an "allergy".  That would just be a fairly common side effect...with someone who may be extra sensitive to it.  True medication allergies cause very specific symptoms (which are numerous and also vary)....but they can include rashes, hives, an obvious change in vital signs (drop/raise in BP, heart rate, etc).

Your scenario IS indeed very interesting.  I know my post doesn't really give you a solid answer...and the only thing I could think of is that you were possibly taking another med that interfered with the reaction (although I would still expect SOME kind of symptom)...or that it was a fluke.  Flukes aren't too uncommon....lol...and they certainly baffle those in the medical community.

I am wondering about the 'true medication allergies don't come and go" thing. Are you talking about just the mental health meds? If not, I did have that very thing happen to me with Morphine. I was never allergic to it. They had given me Morphine many times over the years. (Many surgeries and other pain related things)

In 2003 the EMS gave me Morphine on the way to the hospital, I had a severe anaphylactic shock. It went on my allergic-to list on the spot.

Then, in March this year, I was at the hospital (in a panic attack and in severe pain and 'out of it') and before my daughter got there with my med sheet which has my allergies listed too...yup they gave me Morphine and - nothing -no reaction whatsoever (except my pain went away!)

In May, again at the hospital, because I thought I wasn't allergic anymore, I had taken it off my list, so I was given it. (My daughter was so upset I did that!) You guessed it...full bore anaphylactic shock. I'm glad I was in the hospital when it happened!

So, what would cause that do you think? It is definitely something I will never take again and I carry my sheet with me now. I can't wear the metal bracelets that have it stamped or I would, but I'm allergic to metals.

Side note here, too. The pharmacist called me one time and refused to fill a script because it had Morphine derivitives in it - the doc goofed. He had already straightened it out with the doc but gave me a courtesy call on it so I knew too (nice huh?) The doc never did mention it.

Can you help me with that? I have been off other meds and been reinitiated and no problem, but is it just that Morphine might act crazy like that or what?

Thank you.

Roxy: Risperol is a psychotropic med (antipsychotic medication). Your doc is starting you out low dose at 1/2 mg. When reinitiating a medication, they do this (it is called titration) to see how well you are tolerating it. If you are not tolerating it, you should call your doc. From your other post I understand you are tapering off an antianxiety med at this time, too? Any other meds you taking? You said "itchy eyes and itchy throat". Classic allergy symptom. But, it could be something other than the med.

Do you have a rash as well? Even though you have taken it before, I wouldn't take it again without calling the doc and s/he might want to see you b4 you take off boating, etc. Something could happen while you are gone...I wouldn't chance it. Just my opinion.
Let us know tho.

Hopefully I can ease your mind a bit....the fact that you took Risperdal for that long last year (and I assume tolerated it well?) is a VERY good sign that you will not have any issues with it.  True medication "allergies" don't come and go....you would have reacted the first time you took it and had not been able to take it for 8 months.

Try to give it a chance...especially if it helped you before.  I know that is easier said than done.  Are you in any type of therapy?  If not, you may want to give that a try.  If you are...you may need some more aggressive threapy right now, and maybe more frequent sessions.

Let us know how you're doing...take care!
