difficuilt to go back to sleep

Many a time i wake up in the middle of the night after a scary dream or any unhappy dream, it is not easy to go back to sleep  after that. i get scared, cannot remove the covers from my face. Though i am never alone. I feel scared of something unknown. Is this abnormal? Since i am afraid of dreaming something scary, i dont watch horror movies and if i watch some clipping of a movie which i find out was a horror movie, i feel things are there around when it gets dark...In short, i sometimes feel i am too scared of things which the people around me are not even thinking about.. I always turn down offers for any scary movies, which my husband wants to watch, i feel i am a turn off at that time, which i dont want to be. Can you help me out in this. that if this is normal or do i need to do something to get out of this...

Hello there,

You can try Melatonin 30 to 90 mins before going to bed everyday. It will regulate your sleep pattern but high dose more than the usual 3mg can increase vivid dreaming. It is also a powerful antioxidant.

''Taken 30 to 90 minutes before bedtime, melatonin supplementation acts as a mild hypnotic. It causes melatonin levels in the blood to rise earlier than the brain's own production accomplishes.''

''Besides its function as synchronizer of the biological clock, melatonin also exerts a powerful antioxidant activity. The discovery of melatonin as an antioxidant was made in 1993. In many lower life forms, it serves only this purpose. Melatonin is an antioxidant that can easily cross cell membranes and the blood-brain barrier.''

Melatonin can be found in every natural supplement stores and if safe to use unless you are using other medication that may interact with it.

''In humans, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, a gland about the size of a pea, located in the center of the brain but outside of the blood-brain barrier. The melatonin signal forms part of the system that regulates the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature, but it is the central nervous system (more specifically, the suprachiasmatic nuclei, SCN) that controls the daily cycle in most components of the paracrine and endocrine systems[25][26] rather than the melatonin signal''

''Melatonin has been studied for the treatment of cancer, immune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), circadian rhythm sleep disorders and sexual dysfunction. Studies by Alfred J. Lewy at Oregon Health & Science University and other researchers have found that it may ameliorate circadian misalignment and SAD.''

Nursegirl6572 is right tho, if you feel uncomfortable with horror movies why not stay away from them?

So, you want to know if it is normal to be frightened of, and not prefer to watch horror movies!!??!!

OF COURSE!!!!

Many people get overly afraid and become very disturbed by scary movies, therefore, the obvious solution is to not watch them!  I'm sure your husband doesn't think any less of you for your desire to stay away from these types of movies.  Just simply explain to him that they bother you, even long after the movie is over.

Also, being affected by nightmares is also totally normal.  If you are experiencing nightmares very frequently, then perhaps you have bit of an anxiety issue, but honestly it sounds perfectly normal to me....nothing different you need to "do"...other than stay away from those horror movies.  You aren't missin' much.  (Wink).

Take Care!
