Clonazepam gets me high...

I just would like to share this, I started my serious anxiety problem about 12 years ago when i was 18, in the first days i was given xanax by a doctor in a hospital in the US, there was a big inconvenience, it just knocked me down, so with xanax to get the anxiety somehow controled was to put me to sleep. Then i was given clonazepam, 1mg before bed the dr said, and 1mg everytime i felt the need which means to have a panic attack in any place where they use to reach me, the supermarket, the streets, the mall, whereever.. clonazepam had something great, it did not knock me down, instead i had this other feeling of being 'high' the, level of this was depending on the amount of clonazepam taken, sometimes i felt so nervous that i took 2mg, the result was that effectively i was calmed, but also 'high', then i read on these internet resorces that clonazepam might stimulate some dopamine neurotransmiters which might explain the euphoria and that 'high' feeling, which feels just, kind of pleasant. Now after all this years i wonder wether clonazepam gets me calmed because it really does it, or if i get calmed, because what i am actually doing is getting high... hmm. just curious...

This sounds a little crazy but, I use them when I run out of Xanax. I go through about 500-600 1mg Xanax a month " not legally ".  So when I'm out of my Zs I'll take 10 of the 1 mg K-pins just to ease the withdraw. Honestly I don't feel a thing off them. Unless your body has been to that level of benzo I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND doing that.

Chamomile *****.. I have tried it multiple times ordered from 2 different websites, made tea out of the straight herb. It didn't do anything. I gave it to some of my friends and they had the same reaction. The stuff is bunk.

I have been experiencing lots of pins and needles in the last couple months and anxiety for several months, it has escalated to panic attacks about twice a week with a constant on the edge feeling.  Today my doctor told me it is most likely a GAD and asked me to try Clonazepam .5mg every night at bedtime.  I am nervous about this, of course I am pretty much nervous about anything, but I have always treated myself through a natural doctor and just moved where we don't have one.  I am wondering if this dose is a good one to start on and would be safe, also if it helps right away or if it takes a while to start working.  He said we would try it for two weeks then only when I feel anxious as I really need this numb and tingling feeling to go away as it in itself is driving me nuts.  We have explored all the options with regards to testing for other things and my doc seems certain that it is anxiety related.  Any advice or words of wisdom for a newbie to this world would be great.  Although I don't like the idea of taking something I am very happy to know that I am not dying of a disease and that my symptoms and such are not just in my head.  Sometimes I just feel like a weak person but I think pushing the feelings aside is what has helped get me into this mess.  Thanks a lot!

Hi there, well, the dosages i have actually taken have been low i think, i have rarely taken more than 2mg per day, i dont think that a sudden stop of that dosage could cause some serious effect. All organisms are different of course, but in my personal case i have not experienced bad things yet.

I do hope that when you stopped taking it you didn't just stop cold turkey, this can be extremely dangerous with benzos, so please be careful.  When you feel the need to stop again make sure you do it slowly, bit by bit.  Take care

Is that why I feel great after few beers and day or two after the drinking? It is like taking more klonopin, which I take .5mg a day. It doesn't do much, but I see, when o take .75 a day, there is a large difference, my emotions, feelings are much better. Maybe I should take it more regularly?

I had actually stopped taking clonazepam, it is just that lately i had some other depressive situations that brought the anxiety back. The medication i am taking currently is luvox 200mg a day, magnesium valproate (atemperator) 400mg a day, and clonazepam, which i had stop taking it and i just got back to it maybe a month ago...
this medication is supposed to help coping with depression, obssesive thoughts, anxiety and any phobias generated by those. It kind of works but not completely, sometimes it seems not enough so i can then pull the rest...

Klonopin IS absolutely a commonly abused medication...so you have to tread very carefully here.  There are a few reasons that what you're doing isn't a good idea.  For one, you aren't taking the medication as prescribed, which is never good.  It's always important to discuss any dosage changes with your doctor FIRST.  When a person without a working knowledge of medicine and pharmaceuticals starts changing the rules for themselves, there could be many negative results. For instance, a person runs the risk of taking too much (as in your case, when you doubled your dose), and while it may not happen all the time, people absolutely get into trouble with over medicating....especially with a med that causes marked drowsiness.  Also, you may end up making your situation worse while you are trying to make it better...b/c as Ryan explained, you are running the risk of having an increase in your anxiety taking the Klonopin this way.

Lastly, and I think the most obvious concern here...is the fact that you describe a pleasant sensation...a "high" from the Klonopin...and while you admit you are not taking it FOR THAT PURPOSE, often times the lines become blurred as to "why" you are taking it....and before you know it,. you could develop a problem with addiction.  I don't think you are necessarily at super high risk for that....but some of your post is worrisome in my opinion.

Your BEST best is to get with the doctor who prescribed the Klonopin and ask him/her to consider changing the dosing schedule.  Like Ryan said, you would benefit much more from this medication if you dosed it twice daily.  It would be easy to break up your daily dose into two...but again, speak with your doc about it first.

If you go that route...after a week or two, after the Klonopin has had enough time to build up, I think you will notice a big improvement in your anxiety.  Just remain honest with yourself also about HOW it makes you feel...and if at ANY time you begin to notice that it becoming more of a recreational thing...then you need to get some help.  Those kinds of things get out of control quickly.

Best of luck!!!

Very smart comment, and thanks for posting. I certainly dont take clonazepam to get myself high, but to calm down my anxiety. What you say about developing tolerance is extremely important, keeping it low is a key for it to work properly.

Benzo's can be most easily related to drinking alcohol.

There is no doubt in my mind that people that benzo's (myself included), get an effect that's a cross between alcohol and heroin, while on it. Of course Clonazepam, taken responsibly, and without interaction of alcohol, is generally quite mild unless it's only used on rare occasion.

When I take my morning dose, it might be similar to an alcoholic waking up and taking a shot, to get the day started. I don't doubt that reality for a moment.

On the other hand, clonazepam isn't usually a recreational drug, because if you start abusing it, the more you take, and the less they do.

To sum it up, yes, it's getting you "high". But if you no longer need more of that effect, it's also just making you drowsy, forgetful, and slow (ie, extra dosage is like having that last shot that makes the girl at the end of the bar leave, instead of walking over).

It also builds up a tolerance in the body quickly, if you start to abuse it heavily, so don't plan on it being a recreational drug. That might last a week, and then you're just strung out, with a huge tolerance, and unable to leave the house for the next month, while your anxiety goes through the roof.

Just take it as prescribed. The less the better.

my first diagnose was panic attacks, but it was just at the beginning, after a few well done studies by some doctors the diagnose was to be exactly pure OCD, but of course this did not come by itself, it brought along panic attacks, anxiety, agoraphobia, and everything that is related to the nervous system. Xanax was the first med to be prescribed, but then they gave me clonazepam. I dont take it at all to get high, it is just a consequence i noticed after i started taking it. Yeah it would be nice to have some herbal therapy...
