Could my anxiety cause a heart murmur?

Okay so about 2 months ago I felt a little bit of pain in my chest area above my heart. It was a bit uncomfortable but I only seemed to notice it before I went to bed. I went to the GP and he listened to my heart and everything and told me everything was fine. He said it was just stress.

A few weeks later I had sinus and then bronchitis and I went to 2 different GPs and told them the exact same thing except occasionally this pain would move to the other side of my chest. Both of them listened to my heart and told me everything was fine.

The discomfort seemed to disappear but then 2 weeks ago it become very noticeable. And i do tend to focus on it a lot and I do realize that that only makes things worse as I stress more. I would think about it all the time and I still do. I started getting anxiety attacks, sometimes I would get rashes over my chest, I would get light headed, have difficulty breathing , my hands would burn and my feet would feel cold. I also now have much difficulty sleeping and have somewhat lost my appetite and occasionally feel a bit nauseous.

I know a lot of these symptoms could be due to my stress over this but I went to the GP yet again after my heart seemed to beat so rapidly for a whole day and he said that my blood pressure is perfect and my valves are fine but he said he is hearing a heart murmur and must now go for an EKG. He says I might have floppy valve syndrome and this worries me a lot.

Could my stress/anxiety reached a point where it may be the cause of the heart murmur? And I've only just hit my twenties and my family doesn't have a history of heart problems. And if I do have floppy valve syndrome, should I be worried?

Thanks so much.

No.  Heart murmurs aren't related to anxiety.  But heart problems, as with any ailment, can cause people to get very stressed out and anxious.  Anxiety does cause people to think they have heart problems, but in your case at least as you describe it the heart feeling came first and the anxiety later.  What you don't want to do is develop a chronic anxiety problem from this, so if the anxiety lasts you might want to seek a therapist to help you through it.

Lots of places do EKG's so are easy to schedule. Let us know how you did with that.

We can't tell how much stress you put on your heart worrying, but many people do it for far longer than 2 months so you probably didn't injure yourself from stress.

You could also take this FV question to the heart forum, and look it up on the Mayo Clinic site so you have some idea what to expect if there really is an issue. The best thing to do is to forget it as much as you can until you have a confirmed diagnosis though, since you may be just worrying about nothing. The latter is what I would try to do since there are no known facts today.

I think they can hear a heart murmur when they listen inwent through the same thing, anxiety can maks you have heart burn and indegestion which can mimic a heart attack

We can't diagnose from here. The doctor disagreed with your comment because he ordered an EKG to get the answer.

Until the results come back there are no facts.
