Extreme abuse

I'm 28 year male and I have been abusing Xanax for 15 + years. At one point I was taking between 40 and 50 mg per day thats 20 to 25 of the 2mg tablets and I could function fine. Now that I am weening down I get these uncontrolable twitches. Also when I have an extreme w'd I hallucinate, extreme paranoia thoughts of impending doom.Hear voices about ten days of the most terrifying thing a person could go through. My question is will the muscle twitches ever go away? Also I think I have destroyed my brain over years of abuse, will I ever recover from this horrible drug and live a normal life? Please get back to me a.s.a.p thank you Jason

You need to enlist into a treatment program to withdrawal. seriously! Xanex can cause death. I'm an addict to xanex so to speak. I suffer from panic attacks and social anxiety so I self medicate with any benzo I can get my hands on. Almost 4 years now. I moved 6 months ago had no access to them. It was the worst time in my life I hurt so bad. Nothing could relive the pain. Had a major seizure for 5 minz my husband said. and that was with still taking a little here and there. I never exceeded 3-4 mill a day though! I regret not going to get help for my withdrawal and still waiting on a treatment to help with my panic attacks from my doctor so I don't have to self medicate myself any longer. btw the withdrawals lasted  2 months for me

Wow, I seriously hope that Jason went to the ER and that the stated amount of xanax use was some how a mistake.  I've never heard of anyone taking that amount period, but to say they could function fine on 40-50mg a day is unbelievable to say the least.  Xanax is not a horrible drug when used properly.  What's obviously horrible is that kind of abuse over those many years, without medical intervention.  This comment floored me.  Could he really be taking that much??

I had the same reaction greenlydia, I've NEVER heard of someone taking more than 16mg in a day and that's totally excessive. Like you said, 4mg is considered the standard max. Jason, I highly recommend that you go in for a medical evaluation because like greenlydia said, we have no idea what kind of damage you might have done. My room mate was up to 6mg a day for a relatively short period of time and he did irreparable damage to his jaw somehow. Nerve damage that caused him to seek a doctor because he thought he had Bell's Palsey or that there may have been some kind of stroke and this a 240lb guy on 6mg of xanax a day. Take these signs seriously and get some help asap, good luck with everything and keep us posted.

50mg of Xanax a day!!!!!!!!
Are you serious?
I am totally NOT trying to be funny here, but you crossed the "abuse" line about 44mg ago. 4mg a day is pretty standard for the MAXIMUM dose of Xanax.

PLEASE STOP.........RIGHT NOW, TRYING TO WEAN YOURSELF OFF THIS MEDICATION!
You are taking a HUGE risk with your health and possibly even your life!
I cannot urge you strogly enough to get yourself to an emergency room as soon as possible and put yourself in the hands of doctors!
The "uncontrolable twitches" you're describing COULD actually be seizures, which are common when you abruptly stop or decrease a high dose of Xanax that you've been on for extended periods of time. (50mg and 15 YEARS qualifies you on both counts)
Hallucinating and hearing voices are two more massive red flags that you absolutely must not ignore!
I'm going to say this again because I really need you to understand that you need immediate medical intervention...........much sooner than later..........go to the ER and have someone drive you there now.
I have no idea whatsoever what damage, if any, you may have done to yourself over the years, I don't know if the muscle twitching will ever stop, I don't know if you've "destroyed" your brain,  none of us here has those answers.
You wanted an answer ASAP, Jason.............then get to your ER, because that is the ONLY place you're going to get any.
I wish you the very best and hope you will let us know how you're doing.
Now please............go!
Peace
Greenlydia
