Have I lost my mind

I'm a 33 year old women, I don't know what's wrong with me. For the past year I feel like I'm dyeing.
I wake up every morning with negative thoughts. I'm not suicidal I don't think about harming myself.
But I always think something is wrong, if I get a pain in chest it's a heart attack, if I get back pain  by my kidney, it's kidney failure. I try to think back and I don't remember being like this a year ago. I can't get these thoughts out of mind. Why me.

I am only 24, but I have suffered from anxiety attacks for six years with a great fear of dying at any slight symptom being one of the main triggers.  I finally broke down(with great prodding from my husband) and decided to go on medication because my years of constant anxiety were causing depression and sucidality.  (Interesting when you are terrified you are dying all the time!) But I must say it has absolutely been a life saver.  I take 10 mg of Lexapro daily and 100 mg of Trazadone as a combo antidepressent/sleep aid.  I did not want to go on medication and thought I could fix it myself, but after being on the pills for several months, I am converted in my thinking.  My goal is to get off of the medication and to work on my self talk techniques to control the anxiety on my own, however since I am pregnant and in my last pregnancy had a great increase of symptoms, I will wait until a few months postpartum to try to wean.  I did some personal therapy, but self talk is such a key factor.  I count backwards from ten, pray and remind myself that last time I felt this way, I did not die.  I agree with the talking down.  You have to find a way to get your mind to focus on something else and bam, you return to some normalcy.  Good luck everyone and I hope you all find treatments that help for your situation.

Ahhhh, not that i am glad that any of you have "anxiety attacks" but what a relief! I have had anxiety since the 8th grade due to a personal tragedy! I seen a therapist for about a year and they were gone for about 2 years and since have came and gone! The are the most horribe thing, you cant htik about anything else and if you hear of a new diseses or spreding epedemic, then you think you might have it! I really dont start getting anxious until i am feeling some sort of pain somewhere, then I wonder, is it a blod clot, internal bleeding??? I go on and on until I feel like fainting! Its better to have people around that can talk you down from this and make you think more clearly (thank-you mom and grandma) having friends and family really does help! also, I reccommend getting regualr check-ups, this will ease your mind a little! good luck and god bless everyone who suffers from this!

It sounds like you have hypochondria which is when a person has a preoccupying fear that they have a serious illness (health phobia).

A good therapist can be very beneficial as can certain medications and lifestyle changes may help eleviate your symptoms.  As Tostressed mentioned, changing your thought process will help you and if you are inable to do this on your own, thats where a good therapist/drugs/life style changes can give you the tools you need to help you get this under control.

You certainly have NOT lost your mind and suffer from a condition that effects millions of people - it is nothing to be ashamed of and help is available.

Did anything happen a year or so ago you can think of that may have "triggered" this thought process?  E.g. death or serious illness of a family member or friend or a personal health scare etc. etc. etc.

I am 33 too, and 3 years ago a lot of things happen in  my family ( death, illnesses, etc...) and all of a sudden I started having anxiety attacks and worrying about dying all the time. I went to the doctors had all kinds of work ups and all was fine. They suspected from the start that it was anxiety, just wanted to make sure with the appropriate tests. I didn't believe it. I have dealt with stress and anxiety all my life, why now would it affect me. I kept getting worse, going to the doctors all the time. Kidney pain was kidney failure( I ended up having kidney stones), chest pain was heart attack. I have thought that I have Cancer, lupus, ms, brain tumors. You name It i have been there. What I did was I learned to control it. I am not saying that I am completely cured. I still have a ways to go, but I have 2 kids that need me and I couldn' t let this control me anymore. you have to start to think positive thoughts and rid yourself of the bad ones. I know its easier said then done, but that is the best advice I can give. I learned that you can only help yourself. Drugs and therapists for me did nothing. I had to change my negative thinking back in to positive. Be thankful that you are here today.
I hope this helped a little and good luck to you.

wow!!!  you sound just like me!!!  i've been told that what we have is called Health Anxiety...in my mind there is always something wrong with me.  short of breath-lung issues, chest pains-heart issues, dizziness-brain issues, etc.  i wasn't always like that either.  i would say in the last five years.  i have been having panic attacks for the last 7 years and i wasn't always worried about health issues.  did something happen to you recently heath wise that scared you?  i can't say that was what happened to me but i can see how a recent health scare would bring it on.  it is a very horrible feeling to have....
