How to get proper meds?! please helpp

I am a very anxiouse person. I worry alot about everything, and especially having diseases, viruses ect. I was prescribed Zoloft by my General practitioner for misdiagnosed depression. She didnt really listen to me that its severe anxiety and i dont really feel depressed. After taking it for several weeks, i had bad reactions ( head ache, nausea, los of appetite) I discontinued use, and my Pychologist (therapist) agreed that i disconinue. After visiting My GP the other day, she saw that i stopped using the zoloft, and precribed prozac for the anxiety (supposovly). I know that this i in the same exact class a zoloft and fear it will not work, and i hate having to wait a month to see if it does. I agreed to take it even though i have my doubts.

My Main Question is:
What can i say to my doctor to have them prescribe something that i know will work, such as; vallium, xanax , klonopin ect that are focused on anxiety not depression and anxiety???? I hate the worrying feeling and i am pretty sure that a tranq would help my excited mind and body. And im pretty sure the prozac is gonna leave me stranded like the zoloft did.

Also a note : i was diagnosed as having General Anxiety disorder by a psychologist.

Tell your doctor immediately that the clonipin is just what you need.Forget the prozac.

Don't forget that the DEA has alot of control over our doctors and many of them are genuinely afraid with good reason. They meaning your doctor may elect to prescribe something that in his heart if he/she has one will not work for you simply to avoid prosecution.I am sorry it's this way and it shoudn't be,Yet the facts are it's true.

First of all I was on prozac for years along with nortriptilene and lorcet 10/650 for back pain! No less. After several months I stopped taking the prozac and nortriptilene as I saw no effect whatsoever. The lorcet worked fine allthough I'm sure my liver did not appreciate all that tylenol.Loved the hydrocodone though.I think it would have been better for me to have been given an anxiolytic rather than prozac or similar drugs.I have talked to people who say they have benifited from prozac but many more say they have not.The way I get the treatment/drugs I want is to wine continually until it happens.Tell your doctor exactly what you want and if he/she refuses move on.I know it's hard but it is your health and not thiers.

I'm inclined to agree.Going backwards is not allways going backwards.Self sustaining energy and agriculture are two of the most important things and allways will be.Why do we as "the people of earth"require war in order to invent technology? Most of us are lazy let somebody else do it I'm busy watching Simpsons. It's no wonder so many anti anxiety medications are prescribed each year and panic attacks more and more prevelent in our society.Does anyone know of a really good at least semi permanent CHILL PILL ?

Good question Scifisam,, the first thing we can do we already are... we have stopped spending money.. We demand cars that dont run on gas or other polluting chemicals,,, if our country would get on pushing major car dealers to put out gasoline free cars, it would stimulate the economy and break open a whole market of clean technologies.

Also,,, one thing Im doing this year for my health (cancer rates are assinine and Im a surviror) is start what they called a 'victory' garden this summer growing our own produce. The amount of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, not to mention FLORIDE (used as a fertilizer in fields) and diesel residue from picking the fruits/vegtables as well as shipping them almost 2000 miles to the grocery stores from south america.... andd the foods not even ripe when its picked so most of the nutrients are void and its riped with CO2 in warehouses....

I think these are two great ways to start,, taking money out of the big corporations hands.

Most doctors these days have no hippocratic oath.Thry are younger and less experienced.I'ts understandable. It took me 8 doctors to find one who whould help me with the strong pain medications that I need daily for a work injury. Our govt. and nation is quickly turning into a facist type country.Just look at todays headlines.Bush vows to permanize eavesdropping on our mail and telephone calls. What are we going to do about it?????

Well she prescribed me some klonopin, but told me to only take it when i have panic attacks or sever anxiety... She did not give me a refill either. Hopefully i wont need one and the prozac will kick in in about a month by the time im out of my klonopin.

But i did take the klonopin today to try it out. Knocked my anxiety away. I even tried to worry about things, and it was really hard, as in i could not get in that what if loop. I asked myself worrying questions and i didnt seem to continue to do so after my first worrying question. IT seemed to work. But im still doubting the prozac will work in the long run.

quote,"Doctors are trained to simply mask symptoms for the most part, or alleviate them. However, when it comes to anxiety/panic and other mental illness, many of them stop short at actually getting to the root cause and attempt to cure it. Many people in here may disagree with me here due to the way they feel (hopeless in many cases) and because of what they have been told by doctors, but anxiety, panic, and depression CAN BE CURED! "

YES,, VERY well said Mike!! I coudlnt agree more! I did manage to overcome my anxiety without a doctor of any kind, but its a great place to start because they can offer you tools and look 'THROUGH' all the confusing overlaying issues that keep you from finding the real cause of the anxiety be it physical or mental.

The bottom line that we all need to remember is that many times we assume (or are supposed to assume) that doctors know what they are talking about. Many of us already know that this is incorrect. We need to move away from the mindset that we simply need to be at a doctor's ideology of what is and what isn't. Although, it seems as though that is what this post is all about. While I do not agree that GP's should be banned from prescribing these types of medinces, mainly for the fact that many people's insurance do not cover mental health pros as well as GP's (if even at all). However, they really need more training I believe on anxiety, depression, etc.

Furthermore, while it is sometimes a hassle, we ALWAYS have the right in the US to get a second, third, fourth opinion; however, we should also not use this method to simply get the answer that WE think or that WE want to hear.

Doctors are trained to simply mask symptoms for the most part, or alleviate them. When I first started having my GAD, I felt like my life was over. My doctor, with whom I have been since I was a kid, even told me that I would "probably have this the rest of my life". Now, after doing many years of self-healing research (thank you Dr. Claire Weekes) I have realized that is the biggest lie I have ever been told. I am so much better than I ever was before, and possibly stronger than I was before my diagnosis. Do I still get anxiety and panic? Sure, even most normal people do from time to time. Do I take any ill-prescribed SSRI's or any other conglomerate of daily meds - nope. I used to, but one day realized that I was never going to get better if I didn't face this thing instead of hiding from it and masking it. Even when I took the medicine, I was still afraid of my illness, I knew it was there, waiting to raise its ugly head. Now, I do not spend much time worrying about it - if it comes, it comes - I face it, accept it, and get over it REALLY quick. It no longer is in control over my life.

Psychaitrists and psychologist are better suited for this type of illness becuase they do not simply give you medicine and say "practice meditation and relax" or some other garbage like that. They attempt to get to the bottom of things, help you in battling this thing yourself in a variety of ways.

If you ever want to get past this anxiety/panic, your only possible chance is with a mental health pro. Good luck!

Bumping this because it is an example I feel of the reasons WHY doctors (GP's) should NOT be prescribing these medications. My own GP tried to prescribe an SSRI (even though she knew my history with Paxil) when I told her I was having a hard time sleeping. She was convinced it wasnt simply a matter of not being able to fall asleep and stay asleep, but that I must be depressed. She ALSO informed me that SHE was taking this pill and how great it was.

I believe she was too, her behavior was a little odd in that she began telling me how one of her clients was firing her because she wouldnt refill his antibiotics over the phone. She didnt use names so it wasnt a breach of confidence, but I am ALSO one of her clients,, so why tell ME something like this and share anouther clients information this way? Then as I went to leave I walked into the front buildings bench area,, and a SHERIFF comes walking in , behind me and into the hall I just came from. Being the nosey person I am I peeked around the corner and sure enough the summons in his hands was for her (not a group practice) . We never went back and found anouther GP.

Unfortunatly these stories are only to common, and I hope congress pass's a bill to ban these kinds of chemicals from being prescribed by GPs at all. The common benzopines I can see a doctor prescribing but not the SSRI's and anti-psychotics and such. Those really need to be only prescribed by those who have the latest information and arent being promised gifts for the sales of them.

Ugh yeah i know. My doc keep telling me, I think its Depression. THen her depression medication doesnt work, and then i am prescribed another depression med, although she assures me it helps with anxiety. I am pretty sure that all the SSRI's that are prescribed for anxiety only help those people that suffer from anxiety that is a result of depression. SSRI's only effect Seratonin, which is the neurotransmitter that is involved with depression. Anxiety meds like xanax and Vallium act on the GABA completely seperate from seretonin. They promote the action of GABA (GABA attaches itself to brain cells, blocking the transmission of electrical impulses which lessens excessive brain activity, which is also known as anxiety.)

To answer your question i heard Klonopin is one of the few Benzos that can be taken for a longer period of time.  Other than that i dont think there are many long term anxiety meds other than meds also used for depression. tricyclines might work better for this than SSRI's in my opinion since they can also sedate.

Got to say I am in the middle of the exact same sort of row with my own Doctor at this moment in time. Telling him to listen to me and not make up his own ideas about what he wants me to have. Same as yourself, I have high levels of anxiety. Not depression. But the thing is the symptoms of both can, for want of a better word, overlap with each other. It depends on what we are saying to them. If we are not sleeping or eating they think depression straight off. Lord knows how many times I have said that I don't have depression. Only 2 wks ago he put me on effexor. Didn't know what it was at the time. Boy did it knock me for 6. I was in bits after only 1 tablet. My whole point on the doctors not listening is that I find it negative on their parts. We are told to think positive. To say we haven't got depression, to me, is a positive statement. Then your doctor says ' oh but you do suffer from depression '. If we listened to the doctor we would be going around feeling a lot worse thinking we had depression. Can we say they are been suggestive? All I want too is anxiety meds. All I keep getting is depression meds. Yes, I take xanax. But that is only mild short time med that is addictive. Is there a stronger, safer, form of anxiety medication out there? A stand alone anxiety tablet?

I would suggest you make an appointment with a psychiatrist.  They are specifically trained to deal with "matters of the mind" - regular doctors have very little training in this area which is why they sometimes have a lack-of-understanding of certain drugs used to treat such disorders.  If you had a problem w/ your heart you would see a specialist (cardiologist) not your regular doctor, the same applies in this case.  As Mumbler pointed out, a psychologist can diagnose and offer treatment plans such as talk therapy but can not prescribe medications - that is what a psychiatrist is for.

An SSRI like Paxil or Prozac has become a first line treatment for anxiety and works in many people, you may need a different class of drugs all together. I would also advise that you only see 1 doctor for all your medication needs if possible or disclose all meds you are on to any new psychaitrist or GP as many drugs can have dangerous combinations, or contain the same drug and you could have a potiental dangerous dose even though you don't take an extra pills.

Yeah I have a e-mail system with my medical clinic that lets me e-mail my doctor directly. I was thinking about doing this tomorrow, but was trying to get the exact words to use or what exactly to say so that she doesnt divert me again. I was gonna say i would keep taking the prozac for the time being but wanted something more on the spot until the prozac kicked in and started working.

Any ideas?

Would your psychologist be able to recommend/refer you to either a psychiatrist (because they are able to give prescriptions) or to give you some pointers on what to say to your GP? Even a letter to the GP might be of some help if that's possible! I had the same problem with being thoughtlessly prescribed paxil, and I know how frustrating this can be!
