Klonopin & Oxicontin

So I was at my doctors today getting my scripts refilled and he tells me "After a Year of writing me scripts" that He cant write me my script for Klonopin because taking my .05mg dose can kill me in my sleep when I take it with my 10mg Oxicontin.

I've never heard of this but if it's true, why did he write this in the first place knowing that it would put me at risk and then he also tryed to have me take 20mg of Xanax instead and I refused them.

Can Anyone tell me more about this.

Did your doctor give you any other choices, as far as perhaps referral to a pain doctor who COULD continue to write these scripts for you? Did he give you any kind of notice?  If I understood it correctly,he just ceased writing the scripts for the Oxycontin and also the Norco?  If so, you are going to likely have some nasty withdrawals. It would have been prudent of him to at least give you some notice and allow for a taper plan, or a referral to another doc who could meet your needs.  One or the other.

You have to understand that your intial post was a bit confusing, and from time to time we get questions disguised as a genuine inquiry when in reality it is a "drug seeking" question.  That's why I asked for clarification. It wasn't meant to be offensive, an I'm sorry if you took it that way.  I certainly understand that some people unfortunately have a need to take pain meds for chronic conditions.  Unfortunately, long term narcotic use comes with a lot of downfalls....from the tolerance issues, physical dependency, and for someone with anxiety, often rebound anxiety is a problem when opoid tolerance builds.

You need to find yourself a new doctor right away so that you don't have a lapse in your meds.  Personally, I would try to stick with the Klonopin dosed regularly twice daily rather than "as needed", or rather than switching to a short acting benzo like Xanax, which will also come with tolerance issues if you need to take them on a regular basis.  My honest opinion is that you will have more issues trying to switch over to a short acting benzo if you are going to require the med more than a few times a week.

One more clarification....your doctor prescribed HOW much Xanax to replace the Klonopin?  You stated 20 (twenty) milligrams.  That cannot possibly be right.  If it IS and the Pharmacy filled it....I would be doing some SERIOUS complaining about BOTh the doc and the Pharmacy.  That is an unsafe dose that could have caused you SERIOUS harm or worse.  Thank God you didn't take it.  I'm hoping you meant to write 2.0 mg as that would make a lot more sense. Even 2 mg would be a significant dose, but nothing near 20.

My suggestion would be to see about finding a pain manaagement doctor. They are really the best when there is a need for long-term narcotic pain meds.  There are a lot of stipulations and contracts to follow, so if you DO go that route, just be sure you read EVERY document very carefully so that you follow the instructions and not risk losing that doctor and be put in a bad situation.  We have a great pain management forum here with fantastic people who can give you insight into that process.

Best of luck to you.

Yes this story is true just like I said it.

He changed my script to the Xanax because I told him the Klonopin wasn’t working, But to come to find out that I was taking it wrong in the first place. He told me to take it 3 times a day, then changed it to take it ONLY as needed. Then I find out that I was suppose to take it every 12 hours which after doing that they seemed to work. But I had to find out the hard way. He should have told me to take these the correct way from day 1.

I don't Abuse these drugs.  NOT AT ALL!!!!

I only picked this doctor because he has a office right across the street from me.

He “The Doctor" was told to stop writing scripts of pain killers and things to patients by the DEA because he isn’t a pain doctor. "Guess they went there because someone sold a bottle of pills and left the doctors name on the bottle or something is what he told me"

Anyways. I did fill that script of Xanax when he wrote me it, but then I  read about it and refused to take it so then I returned the entire bottle to the doctor and told him why. "Would a abuser who sells or takes these Drugs to get a High return 60 20mg tabs of Xanax to they're doctor? I don’t think so."

So hope that answers your unanswered questions.
I talked to a Pharmacist since the beginning of this post and they told me that it's fine what I'm taking because A.) I'm not Abusing them, and B.) As long as I only take these every 12 hours I'm fine. Obviously with any drugs your on, you have to monitor yourself and if something don’t seem or feel right, Go to the ER.

Just think, I've been on Norco for 10 years now, Oxicontins for about 6 months now. And I only take 2 Oxi's every 12 hours and 1 Norco 1 time a day for breakthrough pain. So that’s 3 10mg Pain tabs a day and along with my 2 tabs of Klonopin a Day. I'm not happy to be on these, but for 10 years. That’s really not  bad to see that that lil still helps me when I have pain along my ENTIRE back from DDS to Collapsed Disks to Broken / Loose back instruments that were placed in my lower back. AND I still continue to Attempt to work 3 hrs a day just to keep my truck paid and help my wife and 2 kids with things.

No pharmacist with a brain would fill that Xanax script.  Something is missing here.  Even with Klonopin being long acting....20 mg of Xanax os NOT comparable to your Klonopin dose.....not even close. IF we have the whole picture here (which I am sincerely wondering)....get a new doctor right away.  Whatever you do, do NOT just stop taking the Klonopin cold turkey, it could actually be dangerous.  Seek the opinion of a new doctor if you don't have any other options.

Something prompted your doc to become uncomfortable continuing to Rx the current regimen.  Honestly...were you asking for an increase in meds, or attempting to obtain your refills early?  If docs even THINK they see a potential of abuse...they will stop writing for the meds (as is their right and responsibility)...and not all docs will be upfront about WHY the sudden change.

Oh, and just an FYI....a doctor IS absolutely legally responsible for the scripts they write.  Everyone in the process (MD, Pharmacist) bears responsibility.  If a doctor makes a mistake and the Pharmacist doesn't catch it, the Pharmacist could be on the hook.  But, yes, a doctor is definitely responsible for what they Rx to their patients, which is why many won't mess around with certain meds other than minimally (narcotics), b/c they stand to lose a lot.

20mg of Xanax? Is that right?  I am prescribed 4mg of Xanax and was told that is the MAX daily dose.  I cannot imagine the doctor prescribing you to take such a deadly dose.  Does the Xanax not work for you?

Oxycontin and Klonopin are both respiratory depressants, so it is a pretty bad combination. But Xanax is also a respiratory depressant, and 20 mg is an enormous dose! Whenever  you are given prescriptions you should speak to your pharmacist to find out about interactions. He is the chemist, not your doctor. In fact it is the pharmacist who is legally responsible for the prescription, not the doctor.

Anyway your doctor doesn't sound too smart.

It is true as I have had a few friends die from it but it was not in moderation use. There is a big problem with doctors being held responsible for things like this so that may be way the change. Hope this helps.

Man, this is nuts.  I can tell you I take clonazapam 1 mg daily and have for years.  My shrink advises 2 mg daily, but I am ok with 1 mg.

When I went  through radiation for anal cancer, was put on high dose of oxycontin for the pain.  I got through a very aggressive ( pain city!) treatment thanks to oxy.  BTW: I had never heard of drug before it was prescribed, but so grateful for the pain relief.  Now, I did wean off it when treatment was stopped.

I was seeing world renowned docs.  Do you really think they would have prescribed drugs that would have killed me in my sleep?

Are you seeing a shrink?  Or who?  GPs are not comfortable with these drugs: I know that from first hand experience.  Lawsuits and such.  Sounds like your doc doesn't know what he is talking about.   Maybe he is a shrink, but even so....to tell you to take Xanax? huh???  Unless there is alot you are not telling us, this is hard to understand.
