'Morning' sickness?

I am new to this group and I would like your advice and wisdom.  I have depression and anxiety disorder.  I am on Paxil and Buspar.  for the most part, I do pretty good..however, mornings seem extrememly difficult for me.  I wake up nauseous and very sad.  I am very sick to my stomach until I arrive at work and finally sit.  When I am with people at my job and "part of the day"  I am fine. But, when I am off from work and don't have my morning routine, I am totally depressed and sick most of the day.  I don't want to shower or leave the house, to get ready to go out is a chore and I dread going anywhere.  Most of the time, I am ok once I get to my destination, but this dread and sick feeling is starting to control my life.  I just adopted a daughter and I get so angry at myself that I don't do more with her or stimulate her more because of this dread feeling.  Even the thought of walking my dog gives me this feeling of dread.  I know that I seem all over the place....so to sum up..this feeling is worst in the a.m.  if it is a work day, I am fine once I am at my destination, if it is a day off, I sometimes feel this the whole day.  Any suggestions?  comments??????
Thank you!

I have had panic disorder for over 30 years. I am way better but it has taken along time for me because I have had a very severe case. I used to feel that terrible dread all the time. First of all, Paxil can definately cause nausea ( you can check on Buspar's side effects). If I am nauseated I feel terrible anxiety and sadness so see if your dose is too high. You have to make sure the meds are balanced and that you are on the right ones. This can take time. You need a good therapist to help you walk through this. When my kids were little, I couldn't even walk down the street with them, the anxiety was so overwhelming. I understand the feeling of guilt, like I should have been able to do more, but I couldn't! Get all the help you can! As far as work goes, maybe you feel a bit more secure there, you are occupied and the day is planned. Find supportive people. Get a plan together for days off to help you cope. The Lord has been my strength and His word, my anchor. Call upon him in the day of trouble and He will answer thee, Psalm 86:7. with compassion, Studchick

I could have written your post exactly. I have morning anxiety and nausea and vomiting. I worked up until 2 weeks ago when the anxiety and depression got so bad I decided to quit my job. All I can say is that trying to talk to people in the morning helps. Small talk and chatting, not deep conversations about how bad I feel. Exercise is a HUGE, HUGE help although I never feel like doing it before hand (duh!). I also have the same worries about how this will all influence my daughter. If you ever want to talk to try to support each other through the mornings please feel free to post me. Keep working, keep walking your dog, and keep having hope that this will get better. It will!

I suffer from Anxiety and Depression and almost every morning I wake up with a sick feeling stomach. Most days I smoke marijuana and it does wonders for some of my symptoms like not being hungry, not being able to sleep, being over-anxious. After I 'smoke up' in the morning I feel considerably better and much more able to get on with my day (shower, eat, etc) and marijuana also affects the brain in a similar way to some anti-depressants as it reduces the amount of some 'brain chemicals' (sorry not a doctor, im not sure what the correct terms are) which, in people with depression/anxiety, are above normal levels. Im still looking for help with the 'morning sickness' but the other symptoms are at least more manageable thanks to marijuana.

It should be noted that some people, particularly new users, may become more 'paranoid' after using marijuana (I find this is usually more a case of fear of being caught or thoughts that you wont be able to control yourself while 'high') and for some people this may increase the risk of anxiety. My advice for that is to just relax and let the pot calm you down, it wont hurt you, at the most it will make you very hungry, thirsty, and eventually very tired, and will most likely have a relaxing dreamless sleep.

I haven't smoked for a few days now, and due to that I'm back to being unable to eat even while on an empty stomach, and I have more trouble falling asleep and staying asleep for a full 8 hours, but once I get some more pot that will subside and my symptoms always improve.

Marijuana for depression and anxiety is a somewhat controversial subject right now, but I can honestly tell you, after 8 years of using it, that 99% of what people hear about marijuana being harmful is false, and it is a safe, natural substance with minimal side effects, especially when compared to prescription anti-depressants.

I have morning sickness too. I wake up naseaus, dizzy, and disoriented and it doesn't get better for a few hours. I really don't think this is in anxiety, it feels awful, like the flu!

How long have you been taking the Paxil? Maybe it hasn't been long enough to kick in yet??

Also, yes...I COMPLETELY agree that while Paxil may work wonders for some people, it can make matters worse for others. I was on it for Anxiety for about 8 months. It made me EXTREMELY tired...tired to the point where I was yawning all day long. And I would cat nap EVERY chance I got. Even if I was at work, I'd run in the car and fall into a deep sleep for 10 minutes until my phone alarm jolted me awake and I had to go back to work. It was bad. I don't know how Zoloft of Effexor work for depression, but I've taken both in the past, and they both helped me tremendously.

I've also noticed that my anxiety is usually higher first thing in the morning or in the evening after work. On the right medicine, that will eventually go away. Or get less at least. In my experience, I found that the best doctors to discuss the medications with are psychiatrists. They specialize in these types of meds and know more about depression and anxiety than your PCP. Good luck!!!

Make a visit to you therapist and she can explain cognitive therapy to you in more detail.  It's effective for both anxiety and depression.  In short, the basic theory of CBT is that your moods, emotions, etc, are based on your thoughts and perceptions of environment, etc.  It's thought that most people who suffer from depression or anxiety have at least one major underlying negative thought that can affect how they interact with people, perceive siutaions, etc.  An example of a negative thought would be something like " I'm not good at anything," or " There's no way I can do this by myself." etc.  CBT challenges a person's negative thoughts, etc and works at changing them into more positive or realistic thoughts, therefore changing moods, etc.  There are alot of different "subtherapies" that are part of cbt that are more tailored to anxiety or phobias such as exposure therapy, etc.  I hope this helps some and like i said, your therapist should be able to explain it to you in more detail and decide with you on an appropriate type of therapy.  Good luck.

Hi Suzy.  Sorry you're feeling so lousy.  Congratulations on the new adoption!  Even though that's a happy and exciting moment, adoptions  (as you may already know), can cause a form of postpartum depression in the parents (particularly the mother.)  Since you have seen a psychologist for a while (or in the past), I would definitely urge you to get back under their care and augment the medication with therapy.

Paxil wipes many people out and makes mornings especially difficult.  Wellbutrin is a good AntiD for many.  One of the main side effects, though, is nervousness and insomnia, but it's still a good Antid (especially when the patient is complaining of tiredness).  It can also cause nausea (some people lose weight while taking it.)  The nervousness and nausea usually subside (but not always.)  Prozac and Effexor bring good results for many, too.  Celexa is OK, but it typically carries with it more complaints of drowziness than Wellbutrin, Prozac, or Effexor.  Something will work, hopefully!  Just keep trying, and start talking more to your therapist.

Best of luck to you!  Happy Holidays!

Thank you for your post.  I have been seeing a clinical Psychologist for years now.  Haven't been to her in a while but need to return.  I really like her and she helps me to see things more clearly, however, I still have this anxiety problem..what is this cognitive therapy that you are talking about?  Thank you.

I agree with the above poster....paxil tends to be overprescribed and it definitely is not for everyone.  Are you currently seeing a therapist as well?  I'm not a doctor, but i'm a clinical social worker and a number of my clients that I see are dealing with anxiety issues.  If you aren't in therapy, i would strongly reccomend starting some type of cognitive behavior therapy, which seems to be effective at treating anxiety.  Medication can only due so much and it's usually reccomended that people use a combination of medication and therapy.  Good luck with everything and let us know if you have any other questions.

Back to the basics:
You are on a medication (Paxil) for depression and yet you are still suffering from depression, low energy, self-esteem issues.
That tells me that you are either A) Not on the right medication for you, or - B) You and your doctor need to discuss an adjustment in the medication dosage.

Paxil is a good medication.  It is not for everybody.  There are so many factors that enter into the equation when confronting depression but from the pharmacological point of view, there are some primary neurotransmitters.   Serotonin, Norepinephrine and to a lesser extent (or at least as much as is understood) Dopamine.

As a doctor I'll give you my personal opinion for what it is worth.
Paxil is overprescribed.
Every few years a drug is released with much fanfare and is hailed as the new wonder drug.  Paxil is one such drug and it does work well with some patients and not well with others.

You may want to discuss (and don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about specific medications), ask about Wellbutrin or perhaps Cymbalta.  They can have a more activating effect, hence they may increase anxiety issues, but at the right dose, these drugs are very effective antidepressants in many cases they have more prominent positive effects and fewer negative effects.

Hope you are feeling better.  Talk to your doctor soon.
