Hello, just stopping by to say I feel your pain. I have been unemployed forever now because of how debilitating this can become and am completely ashamed of it. My parents seem to want me gone in the worst way as they are looking at me as a burden. Please do seek help like the others have mentioned before you end like me and dealing with many other problems built up on top of your anxiety. It is unfortunate to delay but it seems your main goal should maybe be to also get better with getting help before you try and take the job thing on. Agreed with Eilhsa, volunteering for now would probably be a great idea as you are able to adjust with the help you will be receiving if you do go to a therapist or a psychiatrist.

I strongly recommend seeking professional help. The sooner you can resolve the issue the sooner you can find employment (and get some insurance if you're earning steadily- I don't know how it works in the US)  and once you're employed your confidence with strangers may improve (especially if you're in a customer based job or large team).

Whilst you look for work perhaps you could look at volunteering somewhere? This might make you feel more confident about meeting people, and if you choose a small organisation doesn't have to be too daunting. I chose to volunteer with children when I had similiar (but not relating to work) issues. I have to interact with about 6-7 other adults (which I'm now comfortable with) but feel happy with the children as there is no fear of judgement. They probably feel how I felt about the 'older adults', about me! The same could apply with animals, too. It'd also put you in a really good position for pipping other similiarly qualfied people to the job of your choice, especially if the voluntary field is related to what you want to do!

Good luck.

It sounds like you have social anxiety and you really should seek help. When anxiety starts taking over your everyday life and keeping you from it, the best thing to do would be see a doctor. I had agoraphobia when I first got anxiety because I let it get to bad before putting on the breaks..  And now I have a semi normal life that I have grasp of most days. Anxiety is still going to try to take over some days but you can't let it.. A good place to start is go to Barnes and Nobles or another book store and find some books on anxiety. I found some that showed how to get yourself out of anxious situations.

Your anxiety is controlling your life and you need to seek help with it.  Every city has free or low cost care clinics where you can go for help.  Google these types of clinics in your city and go to one. Also, doctors are very understanding in this economy with people who have no insurance, they will charge you less and let you make payments. A trip to the doctor and medication wouldn't cost very much at all, borrow money if need be so that you can get the help you need.  It's nothing to be ashamed of, we all need help at some point and that's okay.  Find a way to get help so you can get on with your life, and I wish you all the very best!

Do you see a therapist?  What about a psychiatrist?   And one that specializes in Anxiety / panic.

I ask this because there are sooo many techniques out there but you have to find a professional who actually knows what they are dealing with. I have been dealing with panic and anxiety for 13 + years and I can tell you... they will all make an appointment to see you and take your money, even if they can't truly help you. If you do a bit of searching and find a doctor or therapist who has experience with panic and anxiety, they can change your life. I know....

Meditation is a big tool, deep breathing works well. I am also though on medication for my panic and anxiety which I am grateful for. Without them and without the help of a really good therapist and psychiatrist I am not srue how I would have gotten through some of the hardest times.
