I would agree that stopping them abruptly is a bad idea. If you're looking to try and stop them then it is always best to wean them off slowly. Your doctor should be aware of the fact that they can't be stopped abruptly.

No, you can't abruptly stop -- it can be dangerous at worst, and uncomfortable at best. This is a med to be careful quitting, depending on how long you've been on it. I would either contact your last doctor about getting a temporary refill, or tell the new doctor's secretary about your situation; if that doesn't work, the last line of offense is to indicate that disciplinary or legal action will be following if you are not treated by the appropriate protocols. Don't let doctors push you around, they work for you.
