New to Anxiety, need help and advice please!

I am 46 years old and I just recently developed anxiety for the first time in my life. I believe it's due to a newly diagnosed inner ear disorder. Anyway, I've never taken anything in my life for anxiety. I have anxiety 24/7 now and have for a month. Nothing helps it, I've tried meditation, yoga, supplements and exercise. It's awful to feel this way all day everyday and night with no relief. I'm only sleeping about 2 hours a night now. Anyway I will finally be seeing my doctor this Tuesday to see what she recommends, I assume it will be some kind of medication. My question is what has worked for you? Do you have any suggestions for anxiety or medications to take or ones to avoid? I'm desperate to get some relief, it's become completely debilitating for me.

Thank you for the reply, I don't know for sure what has cause these feelings of anxiety but it is a lot of different feelings. I feel nervous all the time, anxious, don't want to be alone, panicy, foggy, jumpy, knots in stomach 24/7, insomnia, a feeling of loss of control, loss of appetite and bad nightmares. It's horrible 24/7. Not functioning at all at this point. I don't feel like I'm worrying about the inner ear thing, I constantly worry a lot about the anxiety feeling though.

Do you have a balance issue?

You say it's due to an inner ear problem -- are you saying it started with the symptoms from the ear problem or you worrying about it?  Here's why I ask -- if you do have an inner ear problem, that can affect balance, which can make you feel disoriented.  This is how most of us feel when we get an anxiety attack.  So if the inner ear problem is doing this, no anti-anxiety drug is going to change that -- only fixing the inner ear problem will do that, whether it's by a medical procedure that does that or a medication that helps you with your balance problems.  Even ginger or dramamine can help with that in some people.  If it's the fear of the problem that's triggered a bout of anxiety, I wouldn't be rushing for anti-anxiety medication.  When you know what caused the problem -- most of us have no clue -- then you can work on that with a therapist who specializes in anxiety treatment.  Drugs won't cure anxiety, they just make it easier to live with.  But if you do decide, or a psychologist advises it, to get medication for anxiety, see a psychiatrist, not a general doc.  And as for the meds, there is no best one.  There are ones that are harder to take and stop taking than others by reputation, but individuals metabolize both meds and natural remedies differently, so it's trial and error on that side of it.  By the way, treating anxiety with natural remedies is very complicated -- it isn't as easy as going to the store and buying something that says it will relax you.  So if you really do want to try this route I'd see a naturopath or practitioner of integrated medicine who can suggest a range of remedies that work together on the different parts of your body that are involved in feeling irrational anxiety.

Oh, and let me add one other thing -- if you've been given antibiotics for the inner ear problem, they can also be the source of your anxiety problem.  Taking probiotics can be helpful here.
Now that I read your post it reminds me that my relative has vertigo and the panicky situation it causes her during an attack.
shirl000 the doctor will want to know if you have constant issues from the ear or is it flare-ups?

Every med has different effects for different people, which is why there are so many. If your doc decides to give you a script, it will likely be for the one that is most successful.
I don't know anything about ears and anxiety though.
