There's no way to tell you, but one warning -- not two drugs work exactly the same even if they're in the same class of drug -- if they did, only one would be able to get a patent and the other wouldn't therefore exist.  That means if you quit Ativan cold turkey without a taper off as slowly as you need to taking the Xanax will not guarantee you will avoid withdrawals.  The brain does not see them as exactly the same because they're not exactly the same.  Another thing you may find is that the Xanax doesn't work.  Again, the fact two drugs are in the same class doesn't mean your body will absorb both of them equally well.  You may not react to the Xanax at all, you might find it works better.  You might find you have side effects on Xanax you didn't have on Ativan.  Only doing it will answer your questions, as this is all trial and error because we're all individuals, not a generalization derived from a study done on a relatively small number of people for a relatively short period of time.  For most people, they do what their doctors say and they're fine.  For some, they're not.  Again, trial and error.  Now, theoretically, Xanax lasts a bit longer in the system than Ativan.  Will that be true for you?  Don't know.  Time will tell all.  If you've reached a point in life where you believe nothing but medication will help, do it as safely as you can, do your homework, and be optimistic.  If bad things happen, act quickly and you can make them go away.  Never stop trying to fix the problem without medication.  Expect the best whatever you try.
