Taking Xanax in a low dose-can I become addicted

Hi I have been having some nasty anxiety for about the last month and a half.  I have started taking Zoloft-today I raised my dose to 50mg.  However I am still feeling very anxious - I become very, very shakey & dizzy etc in fact shakey nearly all day and night.  I have been on the Zoloft for 26 days and 21 of them I have taken a 1/2 of a .5mg of Xanax.  I don't feel the need to take more than that but I am sooooooo scared of becoming addicted.  Even at this little amount will I have problems when I stop taking it?  Will I react if I don't take one tomorrow?  My doctor tells me it's perfectly safe at such a low dose but I have heard so many horror stories.  Any advice?  Thanks

You are most welcome!  I know that starting and stopping medications can be nerve wracking, but always remember for every horror story that you read on the internet, there are literally thousands of positive experiences with it.  Keep up the attitude; you WILL get through it!

Xanax is a benzo that can become addicting over time but you are taking a VERY low dose.  For me, whenever you decide to stop taking the medication, do it under the supervision of your doctor; my mantra is always 'the slower the better.'  In my opinion, both Xanax and Zoloft are very good at what they are designed to do.

I actually prefer Zoloft (Sertraline)...just remember that it can cause a little more 'edginess'  as you adjust dosage, stop, or start it.  Just ensure you are following your doc's instructions.  I had an adjustment period with it, but over time, I believe SSRIs like these are good tool to use as you learn about your anxiety....please keep us posted!
