Uncontrollable shaking--lasting an hour! Please help!

This is not the minor shakes I got as a teen during a panic attack. This is like my muscles had minds of their own. I could feel them tensing and shaking--like you would if you were shivering in the cold. Violent shakes. Went to the ER and they did blood tests and urine test and whatever they did came back ok. My thyroid was checked about a year ago and was fine. I've been having hot flashes/sweats a few days before my period--dunno if that's related.
I just upped my Prozac to 40 from 20 like 3 days ago. I've been on 40 b4, most of my life in fact, and this never happened.
Also on Seroquel and Inderal, both small doses---both for a couple years. Xanax for most of my life, very small dose.
The ER doc didn't know but thought it may be a reaction to the Prozac or hormonal. I also felt hot, and it would go to my hands, my chest, my head...I was cool-to normal touch wise but was burning inside my skin.
I'm getting a blood test from my obgyn on my next period for FSH/LH.
Anyone had this? what did you do? I am freaking out!

What was your diet like? I've had this happen to me when I've ingested copious amounts of sugar...almost like a sugar overdose...it's only happened twice in my life and promise they were the last. Changed my diet and have been fine ever since. You had said you have a slight gluten allergy so that may be your problem.

I too have experienced shaking, panic attacks/racing heart beat, anxiety, fear, terrible heat or hot flashes as if body was burning up (sometimes cold), & vibrations that feel like a care motor, fear, terrible heat or extreme hot flashes (sometimes cold), lots of twitching & muscle spasms & contractions, body jerks, sensations of crawling bugs under & on the skin, gastrointestinal problems, prickly sensations, headaches, exhaustion, wondering pain anywhere in the body, throbbing sensations, electrical like sensations & shocks on occasion.  I could go on and on.

Although sensations often occured during the day, they were often worse in the evening & at night. They can occur off and on, come & go, stop for a time, only to come back again (for min., hours or days or even months later).

Symptoms, pain, sensations, intensity and strength can range on a scale of 1 to 100.  Sometimes symptoms can overlap.

In early 1990's when symptoms started, I didn't know what was wrong with me.  I suffered mostly in silence.  I had been perfectly healthy w/no problems & I had two wonderful daughters & a new husband, & owned my own business.

I made rounds of doctors, hospitals, psychiatrist, holistic herbs etc., only to find No help for my seemingly strange to me symptoms.   As a last resort I went to well-meaning healers who made symptoms far worse, & often started new symptoms. It took me almost 2 years to figure it out that they caused delayed effects. It took me 16 years of vacillating back & forth in belief & disbelief that meditation (I loved) & other practices would do the same thing and re-trigger symptoms again & again.

Literature says if you have a symptoms top stop and see what happens. If they comes back one may have to stop all practices completely.  My NewAge friends & and have had to stop.  Although many of us are still plagued w/some symptoms.

My medical bills were over $25,000.00.  Doctors thought I was having mental problems. Clonazapam didn't help.

At the time I was in the New Age (to a small degree) & did meditation and Tai chi and Reiki I, but not regularly.

I was in crisis, in fear w/these & other symptoms & suffering, when I found an article by El Collie in the Edgar Cayce magazine Venture Inward that had a number of symptoms like twitching, prickly sensations, spasm, muscle body jerking, sensations of crawling bugs and others. I jumped for joy wondering if this might be related to my problems.

I found out that these symptoms were brought about by a little known energy force called Kundalini (Chi, Qi, Prana), & that various East/West/New Age practices (including meditation, innocent yoga, Qigong) said to bring enlightenment & god consciousness experiences (rare), could trigger a little known phenomenon of Kundalini (known in India) said to lay dormant at the base of the spine inside the body, until it is triggered or activated.

Most in the New Age "justify' symptoms they have read is said to be a wonderful purification process (without using discernment). But those of us who have experience these would say No.  In the New Age, symptoms are called Kundalini Awakening/Rising" & "Ascension".

The DSM-IV Psychology Manuel for "Spiritual & Religious Problems" (1992) was originally instituted to address issues in clinical practice, because many New Agers began to experience many physical, mental (psychosis) & psychic problems related to "Kundalini Syndrome" & practices - but it does not use the word Kundalini. A person experiencing symptoms is said to be in "Spiritual Emergency" or "Spiritual Crisis".

I spoke to El who said, Thousands of people all over world may be experiencing problems related to Kundalini/chi energy & practices & don't know it, many who are suffering inside.  Most think symptoms are medical problems, not related to practices.  Kundalini is known to mimic various illnesses, problems and diseases like MS & others.  Its known as a Blessing & a Curse & is like Opening Pandora's Box.

Most including general public do not know some Eastern Masters who had enlightenment experiences also had many physical/mental problems for many years (& psychic/possession etc.) gave warnings & wrote that meditation & other practices were an artificial way to god, & was even dangerous for serious students in India who studied for many years, did exercises, prayer & learned strict discipline etc. What not realized is that practices are occult in nature.

Many of us go years finding no answers and looking for help, as I have seen on many blogs.  Many like this one have many of the same symptoms and side-effects of the various practices (over 200).

Most meditation studies over last several decades have focused on positive benefits only, by those who want to corroborate their particular goal, many flawed studies.  Ex teachers & others from one well known med. organization say, they falsified early meditation studies & hid side-effects. They say they were instructed to tell students who had side-effects it was just some "un-stressing" & to continue - because they didn't want to lose students or money.

More recent studies show approx. 47 to 73% of subject tested experienced some side-effects.  Suggested positive benefits may be short lived & a persons preconceived ideas & thoughts could influence outcome.  It didn't make any difference in amount of time or length of time one did meditation. Those who have prior health problems were made worse.  Found side-effects were often delayed to a later time.  Students usually did not mention side-effects because of what they had read & didn't want to complain & thought they had to endure them.

More disturbing, some literature (Hindu, Chinese, Islam & even Masters) suggests practices utilizing Kundalini/Chi/Qi/Prana was based in ancient black magic/witchcraft (passed down thru generations) has been infused in practices known by Chinese & India: Rakshasas, Islam: Jinn known in all religions as demons, said to be "sentient being/life forms" that can create havoc in ones life and body and create all kinds of illusions to trick and deceive & control people.

I don't know, but we must look at all possibilities.  If what I and many others have and are experiencing, it is certainly not a purification process.  Two of my New Age friends not only experienced many physical and mental problems but also experience possession and problems with entities and hearing voices. We have enough to deal with in our lives, much less, dealing with symptoms from practices, we were not forewarned about.

All these things are just beginning to be talked about in some circles, but not enough.  I just happened on a Buddhist blog two weeks ago. Two Buddhist said they never heard of such as things happening. After I wrote, the blog, many others wrote about people they had known or themselves who either had or were experiencing problems.  Some suggested we need a network where people could start talking about this stuff so people would know what's going on.  The one main things was said that I have been saying for years since all this started for me, "We all must use discernment, and not do something just because you read or hear someone say it is good or will heal you, or will be positive for your health.  Many people are looking for quick fix to spirituality or heal themselves - I did too.  But not anymore.

I know many on this forum may not believe what I have present here - and is ok. I have only touched on a little here.  But there may be some who might consider it.  I am sad to share all this, but when I read that some of you were suffering and scared, I thought I would write because I too experienced what you have too, though it may or may not be related to the same thing.

Hi,

I know this post is very old. But I was researching what could be causing my shaking/trembling. I thought I would tell you what I found out in case you are still wondering. Were you taking anything like Sudafed or another nasal decongestant at the time?? Look up Sudafed side effects. One of them is seizure, as well as anxiety, nervousness, rashes, and feeling hot under the skin. I then called my Dr.'s office and spoke to the nurse and she said it probably was the sudafed I am taking. So, she of course said to stop taking it. I also wanted to add....be very careful with Seroquel, it did horrid things to me.

Hope this helps someone.

Hi- I've experienced something very similar to this. The first thing I noticed was that I was very shaky. Then, I would go in and out of consciousness. I suddenly could not move in fear of what was happening to me (I was literally paralyzed with fear). At this point I was of course beginning to panic. I could, however, feel when people touched me. All of my muscles started compulsing uncontrollably. My legs, my arms, my neck, my eyes, my tounge, you name it I guarantee you it was twitching. Anyway, my friends parents drove me to the ER. At that time I was definitley panicking. In the car I was going in and out of consiousness, would stop breathing, and it felt like I was on fire (although I was cold to touch). I was in the hospital for 5 hours but I can barely recall 5 minutes. All the dr. gave me was a high dose of benydryl and after 3 hours of these symptoms, I was coming out of it. Once my heart rate lowered to 140 my friend and her parents were allowed to come talk to me. The symptoms lasted quite a few weeks afterwards, but became progressively better. The reason I am telling you this is because I was diagnosed with a dystonic reaction. I've been doing a lot of research on it, and generally a dystonic reaction is drug induced usually by antipsychotic medication. According to what I've been reading, it can happen as fast as immediately or it can take you as long as a couple of years to react. Also, it can happen more than once.
In my case, I was reacting to THC. It was the first-and last time I have ever smoked weed in my life.
Anyway, I hope my description of what happened to me helped you determine whether or not we experienced the same thing.

I haven't' had an 'attack' and I'm praying I won't. I still don't know what caused it or what to do if it happens. And no one can tell me what to do b/c they don't know either. A terrible scary feeling. Just keep going to the ER?

I've called a naturopath about payment options, waiting for a call back.
Called my doc about blood test results, haven't heard yet.
Called obgyn about what to do w/hormone testing, haven't called back. And since docs don't do saliva testing for hormones (the more accurate option) I'll have to order it myself and mail it to a lab, cost: 200. If they did it at my hospital it would be free since I have financial aid there. Figures.
I'm having other weird symptoms...I'm very sensitive to sound..I feel it in my spine and head. I don't know how to make that go away.

I need to spend all this money to help me, but cannot work b/c I'm sick, so I don't have the money to help me... what kind of ******** is that?

I used to workout all the time now I can't. I can't eat as much either.

completely no. I went to 40 mg of Prozac for about a week, then the attack. Before I went to 40, I was on 20, maybe for a couple months--not sure. Before that, I was on 60 for like 5 months and went down to the 20 10 mg at at time. I'm guessing a bit--I'd have to ask my psych for dates.
Before being on 60 (my highest ever) I was on 40 for about 15 yrs.
I thought maybe being on 40 from 20 may have something to do w/it but Prozac has a long half life. I'm still scared to take 40 again.

Sounds similar. I think mine was more violent however. I've always exercised. I get enough sleep tho i am a night owl. Hour long seizures that I have no control over is not living and I don't want to live if I have to worry about that constantly. I need an answer. i wish doctors actually cared about you.

Muscles, muscle tension, stiffness, muscle twitching, tight scalp or neck

What you feel:

You feel like your muscles are always tight or strained, sometimes to the point of frequent pain, or even persistent and ongoing pain. Some may also find the pain so restricting and debilitating that it prevents physical activity, and sometimes to the point of becoming bed ridden. It's also common to experience pain or cramps in any of the body's muscles.
A particular joint in your body feels unusually stiff and sore, or hard to move. It may even feel arthritic. Sometimes you feel you may be 'seizing up'.
For no apparent reason, a particular muscle will begin to twitch. This twitching will continue for an unusual amount of time before it stops of its own accord. Sometimes it twitches so long it becomes sore, and may continue on and off for days.
You may feel that your scalp is sore, has shooting pains, or that the back of your neck and head are very tense. Even though there is no apparent reason for this, they continue to.
What causes this:

Stress biology causes muscles to contract (tighten) so that the body is more resilient to an attack. The higher the stress biology, the more tense the muscles will be. Some people experience mild tenseness while others may experience great pain, sometimes to the point of immobility. Others experience uncontrollable muscle twitching. It can be one particular muscle over and over again, or it can be a wide variety of muscles. Sometimes the twitching can last for days.
Regular exercise helps to keep tight muscles relaxed. Some find relief through massage therapy or warm baths.
As with all symptoms, when the nervous system gets sufficient rest, this symptom will diminish and eventually subside.
Shakiness or trembling

What you feel:

You may feel as though you have an all over invisible shake/tremble going on within you and this may sometimes convert to be large visible shakes often at night. It is ok and not to be mistaken for a fit - it's just the body getting rid of lots of excess energy.
Your arms, hands, legs and even your whole body may feel shaky or like they are trembling. Sometimes you feel like you can't stop yourself from shaking or trembling, and your whole body is vibrating.
What causes this:

This is another very common symptom brought about by high stress biology. Some people say that they have a 'case of the nerves' because they are shaking so much. This trembling is a result of an over stimulated nervous system, and is often intensified by a lack of sleep.
Regular deep relaxation, sleep and exercise will help to eliminate this symptom.

I can't help it. If I don't know what's causing it, I don't know how to prevent it or when it will happen.
My doc said he wasn't sure and ordered a sedimentation test and thyroid. Also said not to take the mag/calcium I was taking. And didn't know about the hormone part...so I called my gyno but they weren't at the office. I'm looking for a new psych and a naturopathic dr. I can't really afford it tho. But I'm desperate.

Hmmm...the only new things I took were vitamins. My muscles still feel tense like it'll happen again...and I stopped all the new stuff I was on, went back to the 20mg of Prozac. I just don't know what to do.

It could be the increase of dosage or maybe you took an OTC med that reacted w/ one of your meds. The first time I took that antibiotic with sulfa in it I was fine. The second time however my body went haywire.

I've never reacted to Prozac before. Why would that change so quickly?

It does sound like a bad reaction to one of your meds. I had a bad reaction to a sulfa based antibiotic once and my ab and low back muscles clenched up really bad and would spasm. Also It felt like my skin was on fire. Hope you feel better.
