I'm just wondering what Prozac is and what it actually does to help anxiety/depression. Can you get buy it over-the-counter, or is it prescription-only?

Prozac is a SSRI "Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor"
It is believed that the Chemical Serotonin, and the receptors are the cause of most Depression/ Anxiety disorders.
It is considered the best of the worse for side effects and Discontinuation syndrome.
"Meaning it has some of the lowest rates compared to the others"
A DR usually prescribes a Benzodiazapine, or Buspar for the "break in" period where ones anxiety might get worse at first from the medicine before it gets better. The reasoning behind the Benzo/ Buspar Medicine add on is to counter the first "side effects" that the Prozac might cause at first.
Beneficial effects from the medicine could be felt perhaps the first day, but like the most of the SSRI's it will take a duration of 4-6 weeks before one should feel a "real" difference.
It is usually prescribed at a starting dose of 20 mg's in the morning, and can be increased up to 80 mg's if necessary.
Common side effects that usually go away withing 4 weeks are Anxiousness, Diarrhea, constipation appetite changes, weight loss, or weight gain, insomnia, or sleepiness, and pretty much everything else.
Like all other medicines contact your Doctor right away if Side effects are severe and you believe are "life" threatening.
One should also tell there Doctor what other medicines they are taking while taking prozac, because there can be a severe or "fatal" reaction with other medicines, even over the counter drugs, or HERBS
One should not take anything that might increase there Serotonin while taking prozac for risk of "serotonin syndrome" ST. Johns Wart is a popular Herb that should not be taken with Prozac.
It comes in prescription only by DR.
Hope that helps
