I know that this post is really old but I must make a correction for those who may come across it. Yes, Xanax can and often does cause a lower mood/depression. My psychiatrist warned me about that when I started taking xanax for panic attacks. Sure enough, I had to be treated as if I had major depression (yes, anti-deps can be helpful for panic disorder, but my mood went way lower than that). I noticed almost right away. Ofter a couple of days I started crying constantly. After the anti-deps kicked in that went away, but my psyciatrist was still eager to get me off of the xanax as soon as possible because of its addictive properties, and its tendency to lower mood.

Another thing to note is the severity of benzodiazepine additions (which includes both Ativan and xanax). I have read on message boards that some people have had to go to hospital for supervised withdrawal of the drugs due to risk of seizures and other terrifying side effects. In my case it was definitely necessary for me to be put on xanax because I was completely unable to function, but now that I have been on it for years (a different story), it is doing me more harm than good. Look up the cognitive effects of xanax. I can be shown how to do something simple over and over again and never retain the information. I struggle to read, dont remember the day before, and people have to repeat themselves to me constantly. Keep this in mind and weight the costs vs benefits.

Take this very seriously.

Hello my friend. But we are forgetting to mention you are taking about half the dose the doctor ordered you to take. I know it makes you feel sleepy. But he is just doing that for a while so you feel no withdrawls from the tablets you came off of. Xanax shouldn't make you feel depressed. Unless you suffer from depression? Or have done in the past. It is winter. You are going through a bad time. You are bound to be feeling down. Low in self esteem and the likes. When down it is very hard to push that bit harder. Everything seems impossible. But we must keep on fighting to make ourselves feel better. It can be done. Never say never.
