For me inderal has pretty much saved my life. I suffered from anxiety, panic and insomnia for many years and have been on every SSRI and benzo that I know of as well as some anti-psychotics that were absolutely unnecessary. Anxiety was so bad, I don't know how I could have ever lived my life like that. The benzo's did definitely help but they are extremely habit forming and very hard and dangerous to come off of. Nothing has worked for me like inderal does (just inderal alone and nothing else in the mix)- not even close. It takes about an hour to kick in and lasts a very long time. I take 10 mg's 2X day and it keeps me good all day and I sleep great at night now.

I was wondering the same thing (about mixing Xanax & Inderal).  I have had social anxiety for years & have started taking a college course that is bringing on a lot of anxiety for me again.  When I feel nervous I get a head tremor that interferes with being able to talk with people comfortably.  I was taking Xanax for the anxiety & then my doctor just prescribed me Inderal to see if it helps the tremor.  I take a low dose of Xanax about .25mg & the Inderal is 5mg.  Hoping & praying this helps.  Don't want this anxiety to interfere with my life anymore.

My last post is directed to you, darkchild2__.

Apparently I couldn't figure out how to do the nifty little linking of the name in the "To" field.

Oh well :)

Hang in there. You've got a long life ahead of you to look forward to.

Find yourself a hobby that gets you outside, and lets your mind focus on good things. Buy some binoculars and a handbook of your area, and take some walks to see nature.

Join a group therapy meeting that lets you share what you've dealt with.

Volunteer some time to help others in need.

Maybe your calling is so simple, you've forgotten where the most important things can happen. By changing someone's life for the better, yours will be better too :)

Best of luck to you!

Actually inderal works quickly (within 30-60minutes), and doesn't last long. And yes, it's fine to take 10mg of inderal with your benzo. There's an xl form that's slower acting and longer lasting, but I don't think that's what the OP has.

I'm prescribed to take exactly that, simultaneously, twice daily (except a milder but longer lasting benzo).

One note is that you may want to get used to the inderal a bit, as it made me nauseous at first (right after taking it, and as it wore off).

The combination of xanax .5 mg and inderal  10 to 20 mg depending will give you
much relief of the physical symptoms and the mental anguish of social situations.
The beta blocker effect of inderal will reduce tremor of the voice but more importantly
reduce a racing heart and rapid breathing.Xanax is the most effective fast acting
agent for psychological  stress. One may try different beta blockers ie. antenalol
or different benzos like clonopin or ativan but the aformentioned seems to fit the bill.
I have suffered for 40 years and have avoided much life has to offer because of the
fears and trepidation but now I am not afraid to face the situations I once dreaded!

Good Luck

I took propanalol and xanax for a few months for ahyper thyroid due to thyroiditis and i went into such a severe depression that i was seriously suicidal.I have never went through anything like it in my 53 years and pray never to again. My gp didnt know this could happen and thought it was anxiety, but for self survival i weaned off the two meds and within 2-3 months the depression was gone.I had also lost 46 lbs, and slept very little, had bouts throughout the day of uncontrolable crying (desperately)My grown children were so worried ,they had never seen me like that ever!  Got my thyroid removed ,stable syntroid med, gained back 20 lbs, back to old self!   They can cause a severe depression in some people!

It will take a few days to get into your system. Maybe a week or more. It's a beta blocker. Best I can say is see how you feel on it. If you think things are not right then contact your chemist or your GP. Some medication works for some people and goes against other people. Won't know until it kicks in. But meant to be good for GAD.

I would more ask about the dosage. if you take 2 sedative type tablets one can increase the effects of the other. The only worry my own chemist had when giving me the inderal was that I was taken 3mg xanax a day. ( 1 by 3 times a day )

IVE SUFFERED FROM PANIC/GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER SINCE I WAS 18. I AM NOW 33.  IT RUNS IN MY FAMILY. IT HASNT AFFECTED MY LIFE TOO MUCH. MAYBE BECAUSE I AM VERY FIT, HEALTHY AND MENTALLY STRONG.  I HAVE MANAGED TO GET BY UNTIL NOW WITHOUT ANY MEDS. HOWEVER IN THE LAST 2 YEARS, I STARTED HAVING 'WHITE OUTS' AND TEMPORARY BOUTS OF WHAT FEELS LIKE PANIC INSANITY. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, MY ATTACKS WERE MORE GENERALIZED AND RANDOM, NOW THEY ARE MORE PHOBIA/DIRECTED.  FLYING, TESTIFYING IN COURT (IM A DEPUTY) AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT I CANT 'ESCAPE' FROM CAUSES A SEVERE PANIC ATTACK. FURTHERMORE, MY NEW AWESOME DOC PRESCRIBED ME XANAX 0.5.  LAST TIME I FLEW I TOOK LIKE 4 LOL. IT WORKED GREAT BEFORE THE FLIGHT, BUT ONCE ON THE PLANE, I WIGGED OUT. IF IT WASNT FOR THE GIRL SITTING NEXT TO ME, I THINK I WOULD HAVE TRIED TO OPEN THE EMERGENCY DOOR AND JUMP INTO THE OCEAN. MY DOC NOW ADDED 10 MG OF INDERAL, A BETA BLOCKER TO MY REGIME. LIKE I SAID, SINCE MY CURRENT PANIC ISSUES ARE SPECIFIC. I AM OPTING OUT OF SSRI'S FOR REGULAR USE. IM HOPING THE BETA BLOCKER WITH THE XANAX WILL PREVENT ATTACKS.

I was put on Xanax for panic attacks by a general practitioner and Inderal for Migraines by an Ear, nose, and throat doctor. Both doctors are aware of each other and I double-checked with my pharmacist that the two are okay to take together.

Since being on the Inderal for 4 months now, I have been able to stop taking the Xanax entirely. My doctors don't know if it's Migraines causing panic attacks or panic attacks causing migraines. Either way, the Inderal has slowed the headaches down to feeling just pressure (like I'm sucking on a thick milkshake) and the occasional ice-pick quick headache instead of the 36 hour long migraines. With the decrease in headaches, my anxiety has also slowed. The Inderal gets more oxygen to your heart so it doesn't have to work as hard = less need to speed up and pound hard. By reducing both of these issues, the nausea and anxiety seizures have also subsided. I am taking 160 mg of Inderal (that's an above average dosage). The last Xanax I took was just before my period a month and a half ago when I was taking 120 mg daily. (I have been increasing my dosage monthly to get to where my symptoms are livable).

The upside is, I can drive a car again. The down side is, I've gained 15 pounds in 4 months.

Hi Longjohn.  If the same doc prescribed Ativan and Inderal for your anxiety with no refills, the two should be OK for you to take as prescribed.  If you were not given a return appointment, get one.  The doc might give you a refill on the meds; he might not.  If he does give you a refill on either med (or both),  ask all the questions you have about both medications at the appointment.

Depending on how much Ativan you have been taking and for how long, it might lose its effectiveness in treating your anxiety.  This is called tolerance.  Ask your doc about it, and ask if you should wean off or if it's safe to just stop it.

With Ativan, depending on how long you've been on it, you can also experience something called "rebound anxiety" (your anxiety can get worse.)  Ask your doctor about this.

Ativan can also be addicting. If you don't want to get addicted to Ativan, and if your doctor is prescribing this medicine to you over and over, month after month, tell the doctor you don't want to become addicted to it.

The drug, Inderal, which is a betablocker (cardiac med) is not "addicting" like Ativan, but - depending on how you are taking it - it's not without its potential dangers if stopped suddenly if you've been taking it a long time.   Inderal is a betablocker (heart medication) sometimes prescribed to help anxiety.  It is often prescribed with anti-anxiety medications.  You need to know EXACTLY how you are supposed to take Inderal (with or without the Ativan)  and how you are supposed to stop taking it if there comes the time you want to.  Depending on the dosage of Inderal and how often you've been taking it, the doc might want to taper you off Inderal when you stop it. Ask about this specifically.

One thing that might make you feel better is to know you're not alone as a college student who is struggling with the anxiety.  Dorm life, classes, unfamiliar people and places is very stressful.  As you get more adjusted, your anxiety might level off.  Best of luck.

Heres my problem... i am currently a college student. Every time i leave my dorm i get in several situations that make me nervous or anxious. such as encounters with people im not very framilar with. Even when i walk in the classroom i get very uncomfortable and sit there silently. Other than that i often am anxious about stuff in general and tend to worry(not a strong worry). Doc perscribed .5 activan as needed no refil. should i be talking with him about taking these everyday.. anybody have an opinion?

you should talk to your doctor about both of those issues. your doctor will know if the drugs will interact with eachother, and most likely he will make a schedule to slowly get off the xanax.
