In a month you'll be hooked on it. Your body will need it. That is the point people are making. Then there is the coming off of it. That is a new nightmare all to itself. Hence you will find most people stir clear of it. The addictive nature of it.
To make absolutely clear - NEVER, repeat NEVER did I or will EVER advocate chronic long-term use of a naracotic controlled substance (eg. Xanax, etc.) Use of a natural herbal is an enirely different situatuion.

Talk to your doc about maybe switching to a low dose of Valium, or possibly something like Trazadone.
Trazadone is a A.D, but has strong sedative properities that may help you.
Do you suffer from anxiety all the time, or just something like "Learned insomnia" where you work yourself up before you go to sleep, because of your previous problem of falling to sleep?
Come back in 6 months time and see are you still saying the same thing.
It kind of scares me how excited you are about Xanax.
As long as you are taking it under your Dr.s rules and care.
But Xanax can become VERY addictive... mentally and physically.
So be cautious and careful.
you need to be real careful withthat drug, its not a everyday drug and you can get very additive to it in a short time and the with draws are really bad.
