amoxicillin ??

How long does it take to get this anti-biotic out of your system? It really sent me into a anxiety tailspin. I have been a little stressed lately, but wow. My Dr. says my anxiety and insomnia has nothing to do with the anti-biotic... but after reading some of these other posts, I can't help but feel that there is a lot of missing information out there about possible side effects.  Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately? Any ideas

Thanks Stew

Anything that kills living things is an antibiotic.  It just means anti-life, basically.  So while we call anti-fungals different things than anti-bacterials, they both kill living things and because they're indiscriminate killers they kill organisms we want as well as the ones we don't.  And by the way, there are natural anti-fungals as well as natural antibiotics that can be used for minor problems such as thrush that don't kill off beneficial organisms, weaken the immune system, and create the crisis we're now having with super bugs and fungi that we can no longer kill with current medicine.

There are some creams that combine an antibiotic with an antifungal, for example Trimovate.

Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections.
Antifungals are used to treat fungal infections.

Sorry, the above is a little confusing -- when i say "they" I meant antibiotics.

Thrush is actually the least of the harms antibiotics can cause, although usually it takes more than one course to cause harm.  Internal fungal infections are far more serious and can become chronic.  They can produce bacteria and fungus that become impervious to antibiotics.  They can cause digestive problems that can become chronic.  They can provide a good environment for h. pylori to move in.  They can create autoimmune diseases.  Yogurt generally has dead organisms, because they are killed off in the pasteurization process, though some expensive yoghurts add some back in, and some people are so sensitive to dairy that it affects them adversely, not to mention that yeast loves the sugar in dairy, so a supplement is better -- the good ones contain billions of hibernating organisms if it has been kept under refrigeration.  Antifungal creams can work, but they are also antibiotics, and can produce all the bad effects of any other antibiotic especially if used repeatedly, so it's just best to try and avoid the problems altogether if possible.

According to the medication's side effects, which you can find on the web,
anxiety is listed as one of the side effects that should be reported to your physician.

Remember that you have had this side effect from the amoxicillin so that you can remind your doctor in the future if you need treating with antibiotics.

My son became very ill to a prescribed course of amoxicillin and came out in a severe rash.

We are all different, so what suits someone, may not necessarily suit you.

Do bear in mind that antibiotics do destroy the good as well as the bad bacteria and can bring on Thrush.  This can happen in the genital area, as well as in your mouth.

A doctor can prescribe an antifungal cream or antifungal capsules to take to avoid getting Thrush problems if you are prone to getting fungal infections from using antibiotics.

Antifungal creams that are specifically used on the genitals, oral gel for use in the mouth and capsules (1 single dose of 100mg Fluconazole) can be purchased from the pharmacy without a prescription.  I noticed 150mg Fluconazole on offer through Groupon, so that dose may be available for purchase without a prescription, but I am not too sure.

Eating the natural live yogurt will help your good gut bacteria, sometimes this is just not enough.

If you suffer from anxiety, relaxation techniques, like breathing and others, will help you.  Going for a walk or other exercise will also help.  CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) can help.  There are other types of counselling available.  EMDR is also a good type of therapy, especially if you suffer from anxiety due to a bad experience and flash backs.  Another one is tapping and visualisation.

Speak to your doctor to see if he can refer you to a specialist counsellor that may be able to help you deal with your anxiety issues.

I've never had this reaction, but people react to medications in individual ways.  I've read several posts about this problem with antibiotics, though I don't know if you can prove something like this definitively.  I always say to trust your instincts and never to trust doctors when they talk about medication -- they really know very little about it, as is natural since they're not drug researchers.  All they know is to match symptoms to medications, and most of what they learn about drugs is written by people paid by pharmaceutical companies.  Another problem is that most people who feel strange after taking a medication don't tell their doctor -- even more true now, I think, with the ready availability of the internet.  There is one proven connection to mental problems and antibiotics, which is that antibiotics kill of not only the targeted culprit but also beneficial organisms, particularly probiotics, many of which are essential to the healthy functioning of the nervous system.  There are more and more researchers looking into the importance of probiotics and mental disorders.  This is partly due to some probiotics being essential to synthesizing certain B vitamins, which are essential the a healthy nervous system.  Now, I can't say this happened to you, but one thing you can do is go to your nearest best health food store and buy the best refrigerated multi-spectrum probiotic.  You should do this anyway whenever you take an antibiotic to replenish as much as you can of the beneficial organisms that are killed off, and keep taking it for at least a few months following the cessation of your antibiotic regimen.  In the future, unless you absolutely need it, don't take antibiotics -- they're way overprescribed, so sometimes they're absolutely necessary but many times they aren't even useful, such as for viruses.
