getting 3 wisdom teeth pulled tomm. im scared.

I've had teeth pulled before. One of my wisdom teeth and an infected molar. I got them done at different times but I experienced minimal discomfort and it wasn't that bad. The doc said my wisdoms are grown in and the roots are straight and they'll be really easy to pull. But I'm still scared and anxious about it. I'm really worrying about it even though I've done it before. Just never more than one at once. What can I do to stop worrying?? I'm nervous ill chicken out and not even go. But I need them pulled. Any advice?

You are a lot braver than I am, because I had mine pulled when I was 18 years old but didn't start having this panic thing until a few years ago when I was like....25 or 26 years old. If I had to do it all over again, I would be screaming! GOOD FOR YOU!

My number one favourite thing to eat after my teeth were pulled was a mcdonalds millkshake. It was high calorie (energy) was something that was cold (helped with pain) and unlike smoothies or apple sauce etc is it has no chunks or pieces to it to get stuck in your sockets. But you will probably be on very soft foods for a while. Also one thing that is normal: getting tired of eating. Granted I had stitches in my sockets so I had to be extra careful about food getting in my sockets. The first night home I had chicken soup (tummy was wonky after not eating for nearly 2 days plus anaesthetic) but I got frustrated with trying to chew due to a stiff jaw and then trying to only chew etc with my frontish teeth. It was literally so annoying to try and eat I'd get bored and not eat. So try eating high calorie/fat things for a bit like the milk shake.

Yep. Have tons of gauze. I'm mainly miserable since I still can't feel my tongue, lower lip, or chin. Its really making me mad. It took me 10 minutes to eat a little jello cup because I couldn't feel anything.

He should have given you a pile of gauze (and I mean a PILE) because you need to bite down on it to slow bleeding. Smoking is a really bad idea I know annoying but in a few days you'll be able to again. Think of it this way; smoke and get dry socket which is a buttload of pain, or take a couple days off smoking and heal a little more. It'll be difficult but worth it I promise!

I don't take pain meds. I stick to over the counter. I'm just more annoyed that I'm hungry but can't feel my mouth to eat, I can't smoke a cigarette and my mouth keeps bleeding and its all over my lips. Ugh.

It'll get better. The first day is ALWAYS the worst. Before your novacaine wears off take the pain meds they gave you (if they did) and one advil. If there are no pain meds prescribed take 2 advil. From there do the ice pack thing.

Thanks everyone. My boyfriend is here with me so I have support. And my doc said it was ok for me to take a xanax so I just took one.

So there's no turning back. Its almost over. Just need to get in the chair and get it over with.

Last but not least, good luck. I'm praying for you to be able to stay calm and have a quick recovery. If you don't have a friend or family member coming with you maybe ask one of the dentists assistants to hold your hand? That is if that would help you.

If you have an iPod or mp3 player, bring it!! Play your favourite songs. Just read a book or something to keep you calm. Do yoga. It will be okay. I promise! Deep breathes, in through nose out through mouth

Well I have to leave my house in about 30min and I'm really terrified. I'm nauseous and my jaw feels tight and I have a fluttering in my chest and stomach. I'm still contemplating cancelling but I know that won't do me any good since ill have to get it done another time anyways so I might as well get it over with. I'm just so anxious. I don't know if I can do this.

The thing with having them all out at once is you just freak once. I know I would not have been able to deal with my wisdom teeth being taken one at a time. It was either all out at once or they were NOT being taken out. I've had anxiety about needles so bad I bit down and snapped the needle just getting a filling before. Then again that's because my regular dentist is an a$$hole.
I think you are having anxiety about the 3 at once because it's more than you were thinking you'd have. But it's so much better with all at once than one at a time. Wisdom teeth are just not fun if they need to be taken out. But my one other piece of advice to follow: follow doctors orders to the T. My boyfriend didn't listen to his dentist, myself or his mother (we both had our wisdom teeth out) and he had wicked bad bruising and swelling. But swelling and bruising will happen, but if you follow his instructions, ice pack on for 15 mins, off for 15. Especially do this when your still numb. But wrap the ice pack!! Other thing is take Advil (or other ibuprofen) it's an antiinflammatory. That way if you do swell it won't be bad.
For me I had a little chipmunking. But nothing too bad, I didn't noticably bruise. About a week and a half later my jaw line went a little yellow (old nearly healed bruise btw) so even bruising/swelling should be minimul especially if your wisdom teeth are fully in and are just being grabbed out you'll be fine. But keep open communication with the dentist and his assistants. This way (hopefully) any anxiety can be avoided or lessened. You may want to bring anxiety meds if you have them and want to take them. But that's up to you, but talk with the dentists about taking them during the procedure because he may have objections.

Like Devium already said, there really isn't anything to worry about especially if you don't need to be knocked out. I, like Devium, had 3 impacted teeth and had to be knocked out with no option but that. Several of my back teeth were already damaged because I had waited so long and I was so terrified! I had heard all of these horror stories about being under and then being aware of everything, but it didn't happen. I could of sworn my oral surgeon was talking about someone's behind while he was preforming the extractions but that was probably the drugs, lol.

They were done in just about 25 minutes and when I woke up all I remember was shaking uncontrollably and laughing. It doesn't hurt much at all, but you will probably be swollen for a few days to a week. Now that being said, you can develop a dry socket which I did and it's very painful. Don't suck on straws and if you're a smoker I'd advise you not to smoke if I all possible. Dry sockets are one of the most painful things ever, heavy pain medication won't even knock the pain out.

Everything will be fine and you'll be done with it in no time. Just try to relax, if I can do it, you certainly can.

I'm not getting knocked out, just novacaine. But I told them there is no way I want to be put under. I'm incredibly terrified of it and if they had to knock me out I probly wouldn't have it done. But the doc is incredibly nice and was fine with me choosing a local anaesthetic. And I explained that I have an anxiety disorder so he knows.               Being this worried seems silly to me because my teeth aren't impacted and it won't really be that bad. But I'm so scared. I've been having panic attacks all week. I would rather do one at a time but that's just silly when he can Ddo them all real quick. So I agreed to the 3 at once. I think its the fact that its more than one tooth that's scaring me. No idea why the makes a difference. Thanks for the help. Ill def message you after the procedure and let you know how I held up. And hopefully I make it there and don't turn around and go home.

I realize saying there's nothing to worry about isn't REALLY going to help but it's true. These dentists know what they're doing. A few years ago I had all four of mine pulled. I unfortunately won the wisdom teeth lottery. And by win, I mean i had the textbook worst case scenario. I have a tiny jaw (by grade 4 needed 4 adult molars taken out so I had room for other teeth) and to top a small jaw off I have large but soft teeth. So when my wisdom teeth were coming in they were impacted (got stuck against my back molars) and didn't come through the gum line.
I too had anxiety about mine coming out. But that was because of the N word (needle...eep!!). My case was bad enough and I'm so afraid of anything dentist tooth related they needed to knock me out. I went in, had my panic attack while they put the IV in, then they knocked me out. They said I would take ATLEAST an hour in the room and a further 15-20 mins to wake up, they were done pulling teeth in 20 minutes approx.
Sure in the end you are sore and for a bit it's unpleasant but these guys and gals know what they are doing. If you are going to be awake while they pull them, tell them BEFORE they do anything. Set up a way to communicate, like three taps on the chair mean STOP!!!! two taps means give me a second I'm kinda freaking out and one tap means slow down. Or something lie that. However if you are being knocked out your only job is to dream. That's really it. Plus in the end they usually give some pretty good meds for pain. But seriously, all joking aside talk to them and they will take care of you. Not all doctors/dentists are evil, many of them actually CARE about their patients.
Sending my thoughts on a speedy recovery. PM me if you'd like after surgery and everything to let me know how you're doing or if you have any questions!
