i have been prescibed anxiety drugs to take or not to take? need advice

in october after bouts of insmonia caused by anxiety my doc prescribed me anxiety meds, mainly inderal 80mg a beta blocker to take daily, I have had anxiety since i was in my early teens, and had a social anxiety disorder and general self esteem problems to the point where i would avoid going large crouds of people etc, i have also had sometraumatic experience in the past where i was always anxious at least 6 or 7 times a day for months, but things passed and my SAD improved not altogether gone as iam self consious but not anxious in public places

anywy in october this was the first time i was prescribed any anxiety meds as i was feeling very anxious when trying to catch some sleep at night, anyway the first day i took the meds i felt very calm and situations where i would be anxious i was not for example i wasin a group situation and had to do a presanation usually in such a situation i get anxious and palpitations but that timenothing just calm which was good,

anyway second and third day i started to feel flat as if i was not able to feel anything, i could not feelemotions of love etc, i thought this was due to the meds so i stopped taking them reasoning that i had been through more stressfull and traumatic experiences and had survived them without anxiety meds,I also went away for a to my aunts for a holiday anyway and my sleep etc improved. anyway i am going back home next week and worried about rebound insomnia and get anxious at times thinking about it,

anyway my question is are anxiety meds such as propanolo worth it?i also get put off by the side effects, is it just me or do they make u feel flat,  my doc said the flat feeling will pass after a few days is this true, do other peopleon anxiety meds feel other emotions such as love etc?

thank you peeps, for ur comments, i think i will not be taking any anxiety meds, however, special thanks to MY4YOU, i will research the supplements you suggested and try to get some especially the melatonin but the problem in the UK is that it is only a prescription drug only which ***** *** even though the drug has little side effects.

Nobody can answer for you whether or not it's worth it for you.  I always suggest that it depends on how disrupted your anxiety makes your life.  If you're still functioning well then the gentlest place to start is therapy.  As for beta blockers, they tend to work best for those who have heart symptoms, not necessarily for those who are just suffering anxiety.

Using betablockers for a few months will probably not have a strong impact on your health.
Some people use it for 20 years since young age and claim to have little to no side-effects,
so maybe they are safe.

STILL... i'd rather not be on betablockers unless really necessary.
Good luck in finding out what is the best way for you.

I forgot to add that i'm not a doctor and you should see your doctor prior taking those medications or deciding about a treatments. Here on MedHelp we can suggest people but in no way it can replace a real consultation with a qualified doctor.

Hello there,

You must know there are tons of treatment for anxiety. First hand treatment should be consultations with a qualified therapist.

Before trying any other beta-blockers maybe you should try more natural solution like physical activity and healthy diet as well as natural supplements proven to be efficient for anxiety like the ones i will propose you.

-Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA)
-Valerian
-Passionflower
-Kava
-Seredyn

And for any insomnia problem i would suggest melatonin. It is very efficient and it have not only good proprieties for sleep but is also good at many other things. I suggest you go type Melatonin on wikipedia.

Last resort treatments include Benzodiazepines like Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin and antidepressants like the widely used class SSRI ( Lexapro ) and SNRI ( Cymbalta ).

Best regards,
M4
