In my case the benzos basically doubled the affect alcohol had on me.  3 beers on a benzo would pretty much do what a six-pack used to do to me.  I had to stop drinking because it was very unpredictable and would really sneak up on me after what, in my opinion, wasn't very much alcohol.  I really wouldn't recommend drinking on benzos, but if you have to I wouldn't exceed 1 or 2 (especially for women.)

Like everything else, you will find out the real answer once you try it. Then you will know if you want to do it again or not. Simple as that. We live and learn.

People can get a buzz off anything.  The mind is a wonderful inventor.  I would like to add, though, that for purely health purposes non alcoholic beer is much worse for you than one real beer -- not anxiety wise, necessarily, but non-alcoholic beer is just soda pop, and soda pop leaches magnesium out of the system.  Magnesium is responsible for relaxing our muscles and especially the heart, so even if you decide not to drink alcohol, and I don't do much right now because, again, no meds are working for me now and it disorients me, you should try to not overdo the soda pop.  It isn't just sugar and synthetic sweeteners, it's also the phosphates.  There's a lot besides alcohol that can worsen anxiety, depending on the sensitivity of the person.

im wondering if aftr drinking with xanax for 6 of the 17 years i was on it has done something...since i have only been drinking non alkie beer with less than 0.5 percent alchol for the past two years with the ativan, klonopin and all the meds i have been on with no effect from it now i drink 2 or 3 non alkies with the xanx and prozac and i swear i get a buzz...how could that be...it never happened with all the other drugs,,,,so im wondering if it could be from all the years i drank real beer with xanax and then stopped,i dont know if im making since or not...im on 3 mgs xanax and 40 gms prozac.and never before did i get a buzz off non alkie beer..or could it be my fear as i was scred by a dr once who told me i could go in a coma while drinking with xanax

The thing is...hazy...if you're talking a "few" beers per sitting then I can't see too much of an issue trying.  If your prior alcohol use involved more than that....and you drank to intoxication (and only you can know that)...then I think that is a whole other situation. No, drinking one beer will not put you in a coma...but then again, I can't see how drinking one beer would help you either way?  Again, it is a personal choice, and really, the only option you have here, since you have gotten your doc's permission is to give it a try.  Like I said before (and I can attest to this myself in my younger years)...a lot of times a person with anxiety will turn to alcohol or other substances as a means to decrease their symptoms...which, to be honest...while you are drinking...SURE!  You feel like superman/woman.  It's just the after effects that bring so many of us to our knees, wishing we had never taken one sip.

If you decide to give it a go, just proceed carefully and slowly...and I would limit your consumption to literally one or two beverages per sitting.

Good luck!

More so than the recommendation (ask a Pharmacist) that one shouldn't drink when taking these kinds of meds......the fact that alcohol itself can cause problems for those of us with anxiety is always my main concern.  Yes, of course we all vary in what we can tolerate or how different things affect us...but more times than not, even here in our forum....people have reported an increase in depressive and anxiety symptoms.  For me, I know that to be the case.  After only a few drinks, the days following, I suffer from BIGTIME increased anxiety, and a definite exacerbation of depression like symptoms.

I guess for me...I would ask...WHY?  What is more important? Staying more focused on the treatment for anxiety and trying to reduce any and all possible triggers....or TRYING to see what an "occasional" drink would do?  Especially in the case of hazyworld, who has more severe anxiety issues than many of us have ever experienced. Couple that with the pretty HIGH dose of Xanax she is on.....MY opinion would be to steer clear of it all together.  Say she decides to give it a shot one night, and suffers horrible anxiety and depression for days after...would that have been worth it?

Lastly, it is no secret that MANY many many people with anxiety turn to "self medicating" with various substances (alcohol, drugs) to ease their symptoms...therefore we are at higher risk for ending up with a problem.  So, while an occasional drink certainly might not do any harm...it also may open a huge can of worms.

I've been under the care of many doctors for my anxiety....and every single one of them strongly urged me that drinking was a big "no no" with medication.  I didn't always listen to them and found out the hard way that alcohol and anxiety just DON'T mix.

hazy....you have to decide for yourself as you can see people have varying opinions on the subject.  Just please tread carefully here, as it can be a slippery slope.

RCA759l: Jesus. Just because she has permission to drink 0,5% beers doesn't mean she should drink other things. If the thought of not being able to drink makes your anxiety worse you have an alcohol problem.

The general rule is, you should not be having ANY alcohol while taking a benzo.
Not just because the combination of benzo+alcohol can really knock you out, but also because alcohol reduces the effect of your anti-depressive.

And even if you were not taking a benzo, alcohol could make your anxiety worse.

hazyworld: I say stick to the non-alcoholic beers.

I have to say that drinking even one drink for me was hard until I was on meds, which decreased the feeling of disorientation I felt.  So I was able to have a beer or a glass of wine or some tequila.  Now that I'm off meds that are working, I can't drink again because it disorients me, raising my anxiety.  I wouldn't drink too much, but a drink now and again was fine for me.
