panic attach

My daughter is 8 years old and she has serious nuts allergy which may induce immedicate asthma attach that clog her throat  if she eats them.  Last week, she ate a piece of cookie that contain nuts and was taken to EMS. She was saved, however, since then she is experiencing awful panic attach that prevents her from eating to drinking. She has problem going places even to the library 2 blocks away. She is very young and hard to see her suffering so much.  It has been more than 10 days and she has constant chest pain and short of breath. Only time she may feel OK is when I make her active outside.   I need to know what is the best treatment for her.

I'm so sorry to hear what your daughter is going through.  It makes complete sense that the EMS situation was VERY frightening for her and is now affecting her emotionally.  You figure, not only was it prolly terrifing not being able to breathe...but any type of aggresive resucitation measure is terribly scary for ANYONE let alone a child.

My advice to you is to certainly keep her in touch with her doctor, a pulmonologist if she is seen by one (if not, perhaps asking here pediatrician if a referral may be beneficial)...and to get her into psychotherapy right away.  Children do very well in therapy....and I think the quicker you address this, the better chance that this will not develop into chronic anxiety issues for her.

My thoughts are with you...I hope she is feeling better soon...please do let us know how she is doing!

Hi again, smilemore,

I am so glad that you have taken your daughter to the hospital and do know only too well what it is like to have a child who suffers with asthma, as our both children age 6 and 9 both suffer with it! I was just wondering though, could your daughter be suffering with plueritic pain as in pluericy as the pain you describe happens to me personally from time to time and it does indeed interfere with the breathing as it is so sharp when you inhale so maybe anti inflamotory would be the best for her to take and at her age anything with ibrofen in it as in Nurofen would be ideal, just also check with your doctor first before doing this, but it does sound like that to me personally.

Another route to go would be to get a chest and rib cage exray done just in case she has any fractured bones or inside bruising or even an infection, is definately worth a try.

Let me know how you get on, o.k.

P.S. A small hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket held to the area of the pain is also very soothing for a child too.

I have taken to her private doctor twice and was told that it will go away besides her lungs are clear by listening to her chest.  Also I mentioned to the the EMS doctor about her chest pain, at the time of my son's emergencey with Asthma attach a few days ago, I was told that her chest is clear.  The EMS doctor said that she is suffering from panic feeling however, no further advise.  I know one thing is that she is suffering with pain that stays with her almost all the time.  If anyone knows that counseling for this age group actually works or not.  Any medication information that may help her and side effects that may involve.  Please help.. Please help

I also agree with all of the above people's advice to you for your Daughter. I am too a Mother and have two children who suffer with asthma from a very early age, but have no nut allegies! If your daughter is having shortness of breath, accompanied by actual chest pain it is "Vital" and "Impreative" that you have her seen to by a professional whether it be your Doctor or a Hostpital, you "MUST" act on it as soon as possible as these symptoms cannot be ignored in a child or an adult at ANY time!!!

Please do this as soon as possible and do let us all know how the outcome went, as you now have me worried about your daugher!

yeah I agree with them, if you don't get her seen soon this could devolope into some sort of OCD.. which will then turn into anxiety and panic, if you get her treated at a young age, you could spare her a life long of anxiety..
she is fearing the outside world because of what happened to her, and she will continue to do so unless you get her some help..
I was 5 when my OCD disorder started.. and I have suffered ever since..
PLease Get your daughter some help, this isn't something that will pass on it's own..

At that delicate age she needs to see a Dr for
a) reassurance and
b) possible counseling.

I would bee careful not to reinforce her fears.

Namaste,
Being only 8 years old, I would doubt she is having actual panic attacks, psycholgicallt speaking, but more likely an aversion to what she thinks will cause her pain, since we all seek pleasure over pain.
The chest pains and shortness of breath are of most concern to me and she should be seen by her doctor for an evaluation. If it's been 10 days, it's time to act and not let her continue to suffer.
