panic disorder

My mother has been suffering from a panic disorder for the past 5 months, primarily experiencing the panic at night. She describes the feeling as a pit in her stomach and fear, but she can not really say what she fears. She just says " I am fearful." She has seen a psychiatrist who gave her zoloft first, but it did not work. Then they gave her xanax, but again this did not work. Then they told her to take more xanax and Klonopin, but she continues to experience the panic. If she can get distracted by shopping, visiting with friends and family or watching a good movie, she feels better, but not relieved of the panic. Has anyone experienced this and what helped you? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insight.

Meds are weird, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.  What works for some won't work for others.  Keeping in mind it's always best to try non-medicinal methods first (therapy, natural remedies), if you try a med and it doesn't work, you try another.  Zoloft did nothing for me, either, others did.  Xanax made me nuttier.  These are all very individual.

Has she had any blood work that may point to a physical cause? I ask this because with her meds she should have gotten some relief. Did her dr try adjusting her dosages of the meds? I have had many bouts with anxiety and have usually found relief with medication. I also go to talk therapy which helps. She may have an issue that is causing the anxiety and not realize it. Hope she finds relief.
