i do a low impact aerobic vid and a stationery bike at home. The bike has the heart rate monitor so i can see if i am getting over 100,or whatever # and know what each area feels like so i know that it is my heart doing its job and not a danger. I am at 80 some days and still find i can get distracted with the feelings but continue on usually and they go away or not but i try to keep my focus forward. My hang up is getting dizzy. That is my challenge daily. I usually do continue on anyway and remind myself it hasn't killed me yet and isn't likely too. It really is all about the mind set and learning to direct your thoughts. In a zillion books i've read on this topic, that seems to be a common thread. Life happens and our challenge is how much thought and emotion we give the events.

I started with swimming. I didnt do full laps but just casually swam for an hour. I found that to be relaxing and yet you are still getting a full cardio workout. Then I would do the treadmill for alittle longer each time. As well as weights. The swimming really helps you get use to your heart rate elevating again

Have any of those doctors been Psych ones? They can best treat anxiety and hopefully withOUT lots of meds. Sometimes, something triggers anxiety and if you find out what it is sooner than later, you can deal with it and be happy and worry free again.

If you're able to workout at home, then you're at least working in the right direction.  I still try to avoid getting my heart rate up at all.

alison:  What kind of regimen did you start with.  Did you immediately begin doing cardio or did you just work with weights first and get used to elevating your heart rate again?

It took me months. Likely 5 or 6. But once I started going and made it a daily thing it was amazing the difference it made. Since I got laid off I havent been and I need to get back.

Mike I am glad you have had testing done. Even though the doctors tell you its just anxiety, they need to take it seriously and realize its still an illness. Just not one directed at your heart. They need to find solutions and get you the help you deserve

To Alisonj29:  Are you back at the gym now?  How long did it take you to go back?

I am so sorry you are suffering, my heart has always been my worry. I too was afraid of the gym for awhile. Have you seen your doctor? If not make an appt asap. They can offer different ideas to help you get through this. If you can get past your fear at the gym or even exercise at home I think it will really help. Your heart racing is a very common anxiety symptom, did they do tests at the ER and rule out anything wrong? Make an appt with your doc and get anything medical ruled out and then take some of his suggestions whether is be meds, counseling or both. I wish you luck and want you to know that you wont always have to feel like this. It can and WILL get better. Good Luck and keep us updated.

I know the feeling.  Even if you try to ignore it and tell yourself it's just anxiety and nothing more, the physical symptoms are still there.  It become exhausting battling your mind, especially when your whole life you're told to listen to your body.  I'm new to this forum and reading some other posts, so it's at least somewhat comforting knowing other people are going through the same thing.  Do you know what started this for you?
