Upper arm pain

I have pain in both my upper arms. I suffer from osteoarthritis and wondered if it is connected, I know it is in my spine. The pain is enough to disrupt my sleeping, and I sometimes find it difficult to pick up or hold a book to read because it's so painful. I have to sleep on my side and I'm not sure if it's connected to that. I have tried putting heat on and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Not sure if it's connected to the arthritis - which I've suffered from for over 30 years now - or, as a friend suggested, fibromyaliga (this because the symptoms are similar to hers and she has fibromyalgia). Any advice because I can't keep upping the painkillers without the doctor noticing, and I'm reluctant to go because last time I was told to have a knee replacement which I don't want. Don't mind the pain if I know the reason for it.
