pain in upper leg

I have recently been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, but have been suffering with a pain in the upper part of the back & inside of my legs, it is painful but can only be described as cold & painful to the touch, or rather I cannot bear to touch it or for anything to touch the area. The easiest way to describe is is if you put your hand on the ice in your chest freezer for a while it becomes painful to the touch.  It can last for several days & is reccuring more regular than it used to.  I do not want to trouble my doctor if there is no reason to because I have had to take up a lot of his time with the arthritis & asthma etc.  I look forward to hearing from you on any ideas on what this could be.  Thank you mcbeth1

Hiya...Just to let you know that I have come beck from the docs, I explained to him the problem of this ice pack feeling, he asked some questions & then said he would write to the neurologist at our local hospital who might order an MRI of my lower back once he has examined me & he feels that there is something to scan & it could take about 8-14 weeks to get to the stage of having this test done & then a further 6 weeks or more to get the results.  He thinks it is probably a compressed nerve in the lower back so watch this space........ Take care

Bless your heart.  You are really going through it.  For awhile I was going in constantly for follow ups on meds and to have doses tweaked.  I can relate to what a drag it was to constantly be in the docs office.  I figure he got a nice boat or a sports car compliments of me :)  I hope your appt goes well.  I have my follow up at 7:30 in the am on the 1st.  You'd think I'd be his first appt, but he sees new patients from 5-7:00 then existing patients from 7:00-2:00.  He has to be nearing retirement, too.  I don't know how he does it.  I hope you do catch a break from doc appts soon!

Hi there, I guess I can honestly say that most of those appointments were for checks on medication I have been prescribed because I am prone to stomach bleeds in relation to a paracetamol allergy & most medication (pain relief etc has some form relating to this).   Also I have had recurring chest infections so have had to go back regular to be nebulised, tested etc so all in all a busy year.  Here's to the next year being much quieter with regards to going to the docs.......... I have made an appointment to see the doc on the afternoon of Wed 1st July.  I'll explain he'll say okay then I come out from the surgery none the wiser, but I'll let you know anyways.  Take care one & all & have a good day.  ps thanks for the graphic

I think you may have me beat with doctor appts to a single doc in a year, but I did have a single doc who saw me no less than every other week for a year.  I am glad you will be making an appt.  It is better to have it investigated than to find you let something important slip.  Re: SI joints.  I gave my best shot at describing where they are.  Look here for an illustration http://www.spondylitis.org/patient_resources/images/lowspine_small.gif

I think your doctor should consider this no trouble at all.  You should definitely advise him of what is going on as it could be indicative of another issue that needs attention.  I used to be a "VIP" at my docs office, too.  I was in there so much I was friends with all the staff and they gave me care packages when I moved away.  Thing is, that is what the doc is there for.  We all go through periods where we are higher maintenance than other patients.  It is to be expected when we develop chronic conditions.
What you are describing could be another condition or it could be that another previously unaffected joint now has arthritis.  It sounds like the area you are describing is at least near if not your SI joints - where your spine meets your hips.
Please do contact your doctor and get this checked out and let us know what you find out.
