Vitamin D deficiency... Worried!!

Hi there, I am a 28 year old female and for several months have been having a host of crazy symptoms and no one could figure out why??? Rigid nails, splinter hemoragghes (sp), tired all the time, body hurts, stomach pains, head pains.. I am just worried out of my mind, numbness to the left of my spine is the latest one along with my right hand going numb every night. I seen a rhemotologist last friday and had tons of blood drawn and they called me today and said they were calling in medication for me because my Vit D was low? They did not tell me how low and when i asked about my other results I guess they havent came back yet. I have literally been feeling like I am going to die soon. If this is low does this mean I have some kind of cancer or bad disease? Why would it be low? Are my symptoms related to this? I have also had for 3 months now swelling of the left side of my face, head and neck that is now causing pain in my neck, an intense pressure on the left side of my head and some sharp pains on the left side of my head, the pressure does not hurt though it just feels scary. I am pretty scared, any advice? Would the numbness near my spine have anything to do with the vit d? How to I make it better and what causes this? She gave me medication 50,000 units once a week for 4 weeks but this seems like a lot to me, I am sensitive to meds and I am afraid to take it. Do you know if long term use of oxycodone can cause this? Sorry for so many questions, I am just worried out of my mind and I dont go back to see her until next week. I am afraid that I may have cancer but if that was the case would my CMP blood work have been off? Or basic blood work because all that blood work was normal.
Thanks

Thank you Bridget for your response. In the complete work up, do they check for cancer?? All my blood work came back and I have the copy of the results but I do not go until next week.

Hi and thanks for using the forum.

Vitamin D is necesary for maintaining strong bones.  It helps the body to use calcium from our diet.  A vitamin D deficiency can lead to a large number of symptoms.  It would be helpful to correct your vitamin D deficiency to see if this helps with some of your symptoms.

Having a low vitamin D level does not mean that you have cancer or some other illness.  Low vitamin D levels can be caused by many things including a diet low in vitamin D (such as a vegetarian diet), and limited sun exposure,  among others.

I don't think that the vitamin D level is the cause of all of your symptoms, but it may cause some symptoms so it is important to correct it.  The Vitamin D prescribed for you would be prescribed based on your blood level.  Meaning that the dose prescribed is the correct dose for you based on what your blood level was.  It would make sense to take the medication.

I am not sure about a link between prolonged oxycodone use and vitamin D deficiency.  this  is something that you should discuss with your doctor.

It sounds like your rheumatologist has given you a complete work up.  So, wait and see what she has to say when you see her next week.  By then, she will have all of your blood work back and will be able to give you an opinion based on all of your labs and not just one result.

I hope this info helps.  Good luck.

Bridget
