Hi, My 11 year old son has had a constant dry cough for about 1 month. He coughs non stop all day long, he sleep well at night. He has been diagnosed with asthma, he is currently taking oral medication and breathing treatments. He has had food allergy tests, pulmonary test, x-ray tests, CT scans. He also has had his adnoids removed. He has been seen by asthma specialist, pulmonary specialists, but no one seem to pinpoint the problem. We currently have an appointment to seen another pulmonary specialist in about two week. The chonic cough has started causing problems at school. My heart goes out to my son and I am extremely worried for him. Any response would be greatly appreciated.
Your concern for your son is quite appropriate. Cough variant asthma is a real entity with which wheezing can be minimal or non-existent. You say that: "He has been diagnosed with asthma." but then say that "He has been seen by asthma specialist, pulmonary specialist, but no one seems to pinpoint the problem." The first step should be to confirm or refute the diagnosis of asthma. If confirmed, the next step would be to make sure that his anti-asthmatic therapy is optimum.
There are many causes of cough, including post-viral infection, bronchiolitis and even pertussis. However, that he coughs only during the day, suggests that something in his daytime environment, allergen or irritant, may be precipitating the cough. If an allergen, it would most likely be an inhalant rather than food allergy.
The normal/negative tests are very re-assuring that the cause of this cough is not something serious.
You just described my 5 year old son to a T. I just found this board while in search of answers to why he coughs all the time. My son has had everything you named off, even ear tubes and adnoids removed twice because they grew back. None of the doctors can tell us why or even offer a solution. After an ER visit last night were I was told they could do nothing else for him and now I hold him coughing constant till he pukes or falls asleep in my arms from pure exhaustion. Like you I want help for my son but I can't find any.
