I have trouble breathing in the morning

First thing in the morning before I even get out of bed my breathing is very labored. I have asthma and a thyroid disease that for both I don't really take medication for, I also smoke. I think my asthma and smoking may be related to the issue but it's strange that it only happens in the morning. Does anyone else experience this? Does anyone know why it only happens to me when I wake up? It goes away after about an hour or two and my rescue inhaler hasn't helped.
