More Allergies?

My daughter is severely allergic to peanuts, nuts, fish, shellfish and carries epipens in case of a reaction. She is also allergic to dust mites, indoor and outdoor mold, tree pollen, grass, ragweed, and has excercise-induced asthma. She has been complaining of bad stomach aches recently, and I was wondering if I should get her tested for more allergies? She often gets a bad stomach ache after drinking milk, even if it is lactose free. She has GERD and was tested for eosinophilic esophagitis, but doesn't have it (It's an allergic condition of the esophagus). Since she doesn't have eosinophilic esophagitis, her allergist is reluctant to test her for more allergies. Also, how effective is the blood test that is used to check for allergies? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

Please also have your daughter screened for Celiac.  It can cause stomach problems.
You may also want to trial a gluten free diet to see if it helps, even if celiac testing comes back negative.

hope this helps.

In general, skin testing for allergies is more sensitive than blood tests.  Based on the information you've provided, it is unlikely that further allergic testing would be helpful.

Being highly allergic with asthma, your daughter might be prone to other inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).  Both asthma and IBD are chronic relapsing inflammatory conditions.  It is good that the diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis has been eliminated, but further investigation of her abdominal pain should include assessment of her intestinal tract.

You might ask your daughter's allergist if a second opinion, at an institution actively engaged in research on highly allergic individuals, such as National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, Colorado, might be worthy of consideration.
