4 1/2 yr old undiagnosed

My grandson who lives in my household has been seen by a psychiatrist...she really did not give a diagnosis...but said when he is older he may be diagnosed with aspbergers. The physical symptoms we are handflapping, walking & running on tiptoes, did not crawl as a baby..he rolled to what he was after.  He said mama & dada as expected, but then didn't hardly speak for several months. He does not want to be around children his age. Daycare did not go well at all..He lasted just a couple of weeks.  He would not participate in any group activity. & they finally put him in the room with the babies. He is very bright.  He plays a gameboy & actually plays & beats the games. He is trying to sound out words and he has unbelievable amount of words memorized. He is completely obsessed with trains..it began with Thomas..and now covers all trains.  He loves patterns and shapes, maps, etc.  He also has to have everything the same.  You can't put a green lid on a blue cup..if he was dying of thirst & you gave him a mismatched cup & lid..he would refuse it & do without.  He is very limited in what he will eat.  Shape & texture seem to be very important in what he eats.  The best way to describe his behavior is that if all is well & happy..it can change in an instant to a meltdown.  Since we know him well, we usually know what triggers him & try to avoid the trigger or redirect him quickly. When he meets someone & they ask him something such as his name, His reply will usually be something about a specific train line, such as the union pacific 3985 is running on time.  He is such an unusual child, I could go on & on.   He has been for a preliminary screening at the elementary school to see if he can qualify for services.  They are to contact my daughter within 2 weeks & let her know if they need to do any testing or if he they think he should be in their program. When he initially went to the psychiatrist,   We are looking for answers & help...any thoughts?

Wow, I can't believe a psychiatrist would tell you Asperger's. Are you sure an actual psychiatrist said Asperger's, and not Austism?

Asperger's never has a language delay associated with it. A bright kid with the a trouble communicating and speaking at age 4 would definitely be PDD-NOS or classic Autism.

There are two professionals you need to see- a Developmental Pediatrician and a Speech-Language Pathologist.

See a different psychiatrist? Mine isn't much better... You can read my journals and the comment I made about mine.  It sounds to me like it could be  autism. You can also send a message to my dad who can be a great resource. (You can find him by clicking on my profile)
