Autism

I have a 5 yr old with Autism. His primary care physician has him on Risperidone but I don't think its helping him. He has alot of outburts daily and he doesn't talk. I want to know if there is any other medication out there to help my son. I was told that he might need Retlin. Please help.

hello

my son is 16 and he is autistic, everyone knew when he was a baby but I didnt want to admit it, finally I went and got him checked with a specialist and it was autism I have to tell you it took a toll on me, I didnt know what to do but I was very lucky I looked at programs and found a school for him, he never spoke and was always spinning his head alot, he started school at the age of 2 I will never forget the very first day he got back home he came up to me and said his first word, he said hi, I was so happy, his teachers were wonderful, he taught me sign language, which I totally forgotten now, he is doing so well in school, he talks, he loves the computer his video games, but he walks back and forth alot and spins his pencil, I always ask hm why does he do that and he tells me that it makes him feel good, he says that he sees alot of zeros so thats y he spins his pencil the teachers tried to put him in regular school once and I didnt agree but we tried and it was a disaster, he doesnt like change and he flipped so they put him back he is in a class of 12 kids with 2 teachers, he is a big boy 6 feet 3 and the sweetest kindest boy u can ever meet, I tell him hes my present from god, I never gave him medication for his autism, he just needs structure, a pattern to keep every day,  if anything changes forget it he has a major tantrum, he dont like loud noise, not even loud music, one thing I do have a problem with him is that he does not like to share, and he has 3 other siblings older than him, and there is always a problem with sharing the computer lol, but thats the only bad part, he has his own video games and his own tv, he loves to draw, they have him in boces, which he will be going to school half day and working the other half, theres alot of help for autistic children now

if there is anything that I can help you with or you just want to talk I will be more than happy to help out in any way

good luck to u

cindy

I hope

I'm not exactly sure what to give him for that. His parent's have him on a whole list full of things. I would just research it. The boy I teach is put on things b/c of his gluten free diet, he's on something to detox his body of mercury and other things I'm not even sure of.

As for teaching him....it's good to do it as early as possible. Look into teaching using IBI techniques. You can search that too. He may not be able to sit and learn now but you can teach him by using reinforcements. Look into it....I just borrowed a book that's called Behaviour Intervention for Young Children with Autism by Maurice, Green and Luce. It lays out good programs to use for children.

What does your son's outbursts consist of?

I haven't tried sign language with him because he doesn't sit long enough to learn how to sign. Can u tell me what natural stuff I can do to help with his outburts? I was told to give him fish oil n cod liver oil.

The little boy that I work with is on a lot of natural stuff to detox him. Diet can be a big part of everything to. I would go the more natural way if you can. Have you tried doing sign language with him as a form of communication?
