Has anyone ever heard if an autoimmune phenomonon?

I am new to this specific forum.  I am always on the thyroid disorder forum.  I have Hasrhimoto and Graves disease.  I had my thyroid removed in Dec.  I was also in a tragic car accident in1986.  I had my spleen and gall bladder removed.  I also contracted hep c from a blood transfusion.  (it was before they tested for it)  The hep c has always been under control but I am trying to give you all of the lovely details.  Since my thyroid surgery, I have had severe facial swelling.( to the point my face is distorted at times and sometimes just swollen on one side)  I am also losing my hair and it has been confirmed that  it's not from my thyroid.  I saw a specialist last week and he said that I could have an autoimmune phenomonon.  Has anyone ever heard of this?  He has me on major doses of prednisone to reduce the swelling.  It is working for the most part.  I am scared that he is going to confirm this autoimmune phenomonon next week.  Does anyone have any idea what could be in store for me?  I am scared and was hoping that someone could give me some insight.  Thank you!

Thank you so much for your response.  I am not sure what an ANA is.  I have had my blood drawn almost every other week for the last 5 months and I carry my doucments with me to each dr.  So, yes he was looking at bloodwork.  Let me know what an ANA is and I maybe you will have some insight for me.  Thank you so very much.

I read your post and I am sorry you are having difficulties.  I had to go to the dictionary just to see what other descriptions there may be for phenomonom and I came up with this:  phe·nom·e·non (f-nm-nn, -nn)
n. pl. phe·nom·e·na (-n)
1. An occurrence, circumstance, or fact that is perceptible by the senses.
2. pl. phe·nom·e·nons
a. An unusual, significant, or unaccountable fact or occurrence; a marvel.
b. A remarkable or outstanding person; a paragon. See Synonyms at wonder.
3. Philosophy In the philosophy of Kant, an object as it is perceived by the senses, as opposed to a noumenon.
4. Physics An observable event.

The doctor seems to have used a term that I at least have not heard used to say that maybe you are having a "flare"?? I don't know.  I am guessing and I don't want to scare you.  But I have never heard a doctor say phenomonom.  I wouldn't let that worry you though.  Have you ever been told you have a positive ANA?  You said he is going to confirm this dx next week, did he draw blood?
God Bless,
Joni
