Could Scarlet Fever be the Culprit?

Thank you in advance for answering our questions. I was 5 years old when I was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. I remember being so sick, nightmares, high fever etc. Could this be one of the culprits along with s many more that could have brought my Fibro/CFS to the surface.? I also had 3 major knee surgeries in 2007, I went through major trauma during all 3 surgeries. Thank you again.

Scarlet Fever is caused by Strepococcus bacterial infection (group A Strep) that can in some patients remain latent for some time and then reappear.  In most patients the exposure and development of immunity occurs in childhood, but it can cause the condition in adults that were never exposed as children or in adults that carry a latent infection that can reappear due to immune suppression, trauma, surgery, or other situations.  By itself, I do not know of any evidence that this type of infection can result in FMS/CFS, but it could be one of the mix of infections found in these patients along with intracellular bacterial infections and viral infections.  More information about FMS/CFS infections can be found on our website, www.immed.org   ProfGN
