Unfortunately, blood cultures will not detect the types of infections I was referring to, such as Mycoplasma, Chlamydia pn., Borrelia, etc. Usually these require very sensitive serology and molecular tests such as PCR. You can find more information on our website, www.immed.org
One more thing... Is this something an infectious disease specialist should be familiar with?
What type of testing is done for this? I've had blood cultures done. Still waiting for final results but so far 3 sets haven't shown anything. Thank you!
Your symptoms sound a lot like a sinus infection that became systemic, resulting in additional signs/symptoms. The course of Abx that you were on was likely not long enough or perhaps not even the correct Abx for your infection. Often these types of infections slowly become systemic if not treated properly. I can tell you that quite of few veterans had this initial symptom but since they were inadequately treated, the infection slowly spread. This would explain the other problems that you developed, especially the thyroid and other problems. In the case of the veterans, we found that they had systemic Mycoplasma infections, but that could or could not be the culprit there. Once they were placed on long-term Abx like doxycycline, their systemic symptoms slowly abated, along with their sinus problems.
