On medicine net- a com website, a Dr. Stoppler says in answering someone else's high platelet question:
"An elevated platelet count is known as thrombocytosis."
"An elevated platelet count can be observed in people without significant medical problems. Mild to moderately elevated platelet counts are commonly seen when chronic inflammation is present. In other cases a high platelet count can signal a more serious blood problem known as a myeloproliferative disorder (abnormal growth of blood cell elements within the bone marrow). Your doctor may need to perform additional tests to determine the cause of an abnormally high platelet count."
Also from medicine net:
"Another clue in the CBC is the mean platelet volume or MPV, which is an estimate of the average size of platelets in the blood. A low MPV number may suggest platelet production problem, whereas, a high number may indicate increased destruction."
Thank you...yeah I guess I'll just have to wait until my next doctor's appointment to find out, it just makes me nervous not having control over my body.
I'd guess the most likely explanation for your platelet count is inflammation of some sort. There are other possible causes, of course; only your doctor can tell you what your lab results mean in the context of your own medical history.
I don't know about PMV, sorry.
You may want to try the family medicine forum here on MedHelp to see if you can get a better answer there, as I believe this falls under the expertise of a general practitioner.
Unfortunately, I'm not certain the significance of high platelets. Perhaps someone else in our community, or elsewhere on the MedHelp website will have more information to offer. I've also had a CBC with moderately high platelets in the past, but I believe a more recent test showed normal platelet levels.
I'm less familiar with "PMV", is it possible you meant "MPV"? I'd definitely recommend asking your doctor about the significance of these abnormal values. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
