I need sleep!!

I posted this in a couple of other places, but wanted your ladies opinions as well.  This is really getting out of hand and I'm exhausted!

I am 15 weeks preggers and have been reading how it's best to sleep on your left side. I normally sleep on my back, but have been trying to make the transition over the last couple of weeks.  I've slept with a body pillow for over 6 years now, so I do have that to prop between my legs when on my side.

Part of the problem is we have a TERIBBLE mattress!!  It causes me incredible pain in my hips to sleep on my side and I eventually roll over to my back just to get some sleep.  Plus I wake up stiff and in pain in the morning.  There is no way that we can afford to buy a new mattress.

My questions are this: Are there any suggestions on what I can do?  Is there a cheaper alternative then buying a whole new mattress?  Should I try a different body pillow.  When in your pregnancy did you find you HAD to sleep on your side?

I know that as much as I try to sleep on my side I wake up all the time and I am on my back! I have a body pillow that I really like but I also have a bout 4 other pillows on hand in bed. The reason why is because I have woke up a few times and I am almost sleeping on my stomach, well about as much as I can at this point. I use pillows behind me, for my back and I try to keep on under my belly just in case I end up almost on my stomach!
I know with my son I slept on my back for most of my pregnancy until my body couldnt handle it anymore. It did get painful and since Im always told, 'if it hurts dont do it' then well I guess it wont hurt to much if what Im doing doesnt hurt me to much. (I mean that about only some things!)
Wishing you luck Bridgette!!!

I new women who slept on thier stomaches the whole pregnancy and some that slept on their backs and their kids are ok.  I could not sleep on my pillow top mattress, my bedframe was already 6 inches off the ground and witht the mattress's i was to high off the ground and my equilibrium felt really off so i got a cheap mattress, but i found myself on my stomache, alot, sometimes i would position pillows on back and infront of me as a reminder not to roll on stomache lol., it worked sometimes.

I did decide to get a foam topper for our mattress.  Now just waiting for it to be delivered.  I think I'm also going to get a new body pillow.  After all mine is pretty old and flat as a pancake.

Thanks for all your advice ladies!!

I just went to my appt on Friday and asked my doctor this exact question.  I told him I am a back and stomach sleeper.  He told me it doesnt matter if I sleep on my back.  I asked him about all the stuff they say on the internet and he said that at one time they thought it was best to sleep on your side but they have done extensive research and found that sleeping on my back or stomach is perfectly fine.

He said in a couple more weeks my stomach will probably be too uncomfortable but as long as it is comfortable for me it is fine for the baby.  He said the baby is swimming in a pool and has plenty of cushion around him/her.  He also said it is more important for me to be well rested than to sleep a certain way.  He said if I get run down from lack of sleep I have a better chance of catching a virus or infection so he would rather me sleep anyway I can.

I'm 28 weeks 5 days and I still find myself sleeping on my back from time to time, at 15 weeks I'm not sure it makes that big of a difference, the bigger the baby gets the bigger of an issue it could be.

A lady in my pre-natal yoga class said that she had slept in a recliner for a little bit and she'd also sleep somewhat sitting up (putting pillows under her back and head) that way she could sleep on her back and found it more comfortable.

And yeah the peeing will typically get better in the second trimester, then get worse again in the third as the baby puts pressure on your bladder and kick you.

Good luck, finding ways to sleep is always tricky during pregnancy!

im not sure how much the memory foam toppers are, but if that's still a bit pricey you can get an egg carton topper (not sure what they are called here, but they are a foam topper that looks like an egg carton)

I had to get a belly wedge as i get too hot with the body pillow. its a small wedge that slips under your belly to support it when laying on your side. you can use it between your legs as well to support your hips. you can also put a pillow behind one side of your back so your not laying flat on your back, or on your side.

when im not preggers i sleep in every position possible, so i cant wait to sleep on my back and tummy again!!!! i wake up supper sore through the night and sometimes have to put four pillows behind me to sleep sitting up to give my hips and lower back a break.

I have to say nights can be the worst time of day for me.

Hey, the memory fooam topper may help you enough. We bought one when i was pregnant and it was just like sleeping on a new one! There are alot of differing opinions about sleeping on your left side and when to do it.
My midwife who is also a pregnancy massage therapist said that you only have to slightly raise the right side of your bottom to take the pressure off your main artery to improve blood flow to the baby. Once i tried putting a flat pillow underneath my side, i slept better.
In later pregnancy, i had no choice but to sleep fullly on my left side because i was too heavy to have the pillow underneath my. I went alost two weeks overdue and in those last two weeks i slept on the recliner!

Good Luck!

Bridgette: I got a pregnancy pillow and it really helped.  They have them different places, I think mine is called a Snoogle?  Weird, I know....but it helps.  I use it to stay on my side and you can arrange it many different ways so I also keep it between my knees also.

I have also asked at my appointments about sleep position and basically, although you read about staying on the left side in all they books, docs will say to sleep however you are comfortable.  I'd say you should be fine throughout your second trimester.  I still find myself on my back part of the night....

Don't worry, the peeing will get  better =).  Now that I'm in my 2nd tri-mester I don't usually have to get up in the middle of the night anymore.

I just ordered a memory foam mattress cover, so I guess I'll see how that goes . . .
