Back MRI Results

I just recently had an MRI done on back.  Can someone tell me if these results would give me the amount of discomfort I'm having?  It states that there is a mild leftward scoliotic curvature of the lumbar spine with no acute fractures or subluxation.  There is a minimal narrowing at the L5-S1 disk space level.  Minimal narrowing at the Lf-S1 disc space level with no acute fractures or subluxation of the lumbar spine.  I am constantly bothered with back pain mostly lower to middle.  Thanks

Thanks....I can't wait to get these books and start seeing if they help any.  I did read several reviews from people on them and all sounds good.  I'll let you know how things go.  Thanks for your advise.

my pain was sort of like that. I had knots and spasm in very specific places (around both shoulder blades and also in the lower back) and general stiffness in the rest of my back. It is possible that your pain is related to the surgery. surgery casues scar tissue inthe muscle tissue because the organs are located under the muscles layers, which have to be pierced or poked through to remove a gall bladder. So, these muscles may have adhesions in them that need to be worked out. I would definitely (if your MD says it's ok) pursue a rigorous course of proper strectching and exercise. do extension (see Jolie Bookspan's site) stretches/exerciese as often as possible, and sit up straight (get your head over your spine by tucking your chin inwards) and pinch those shoulder blades together whenever you can. Do these stretches and exercises (the D'arezzo posture book hads great 20-30 minute routines) whenever you can. have good posture 24/7. give it a few months. good luck

Well it really started back about 8 mos ago when I was having lower and upper back abdominal pains.  Very specific in certain places on those areas.  Had different test done including hida scan which did reveal gallbladder disfunction so MD sent me to surgeon and he then removed gallbladder.  Problem is that the pain has never really went away but now seems all over.  Mostly like I said in the lower back area and in one spot in upper back right around right shoulder blade in the area of the rib.  Had an upper endo done but proven normal so then MD sent me to have the MRI.  Still having those pains.  Feels like someone is poking me in that area.  Lower back feels like just all over very stiff and soreness.  Maybe like you said muscle.  I work at a desk job full time but do get up move quite alot throughtout the day.  Not really overweight but could lose a few, have a fairly active life style.  Have tried some yoga moves but didn't seem to help.  Pain just seems to be worse.  It seems pretty localized in that upper shoulder blade area and the lower back.  If this is all muscle it just seems to have happened  so fast.  It kinda feels like there are certain areas where I could describe pain as spasms in pin pointed areas.  Was that how yours was?  Just curious.

i am not an MD so I cannot answer w regard to gall bladder/endometriosis. I have read my own MRIs numerous time, and researched the spine and the terminology. I can only tell you from my my own experience. If the pain feels like it is in the muscles, then it probably is. To me, your MRI report does not lokk bad. Mild means mild. why dont you describe your problem a little better-- where is your pain-- does it feel like muscle soreness? ar you on the computer alot? what do you do for a living? are you overweight?

This whole back pain thing has been really confusing to me since I had my gallbladder taken out on Jan 15th.  I've never had back problems really until maybe six months before that and ever since.  I was just diagnosed with endometriosis also and I know that can cause alot of back pain as well.  I guess I'm trying to fix the problem but am not really sure just exactly what is causing it since it seemed to come on within the last 8 months or so.  Up to then I've always been pretty healthy.  I just didn't know if those results which were "mild" could warrant the pain I am having.  Thanks for your help...you seem to understand what I'm dealing with.

be aware that scoliosis just means your spine is bent to one side-- yours is mild according to your report. It could just be that you are "stuck" that way due to YOUR habits and the way you trained your muscles over the years. Could be anything-- the way you sleep, the way you sit while you are driving, the way you sit or lay to watch tv, the way you position yourself for work etc.... It may be that your muscles have pulled your spine to one side a bit.. with proper training/stretching/exercise/core strength, i think you can get risd of the pain. but you must be aware of your posture ALL the time and strengthen the correct muscles and stretch the correct muscles---  for instance one thing you probably do NOT want to do is stretch those mid back muscles.. they are probably too weak already.... Jolie Bookspan's site helped me ALOT. I read it in full at least a dozen times. You also must be committed 24/7. walk straight, sleep correctly, stretch and exercise often etc...... good luck.

Thanks for the recommendations on the books.  I did in fact order those books.  I'm anxious to get them and start working on those muscles.  Hopefully that will help.  Thanks again.

get a book on posture by D'arezzo. Also go to a website by Jolie Bookspan, and maybe get her book about fixing back pain without drugs or surgery. It's your muscles that hurt, not your spine.

Thanks for the advice.  When my doctor's nurse had called with the results she had first told me over the phone that the MRI results came back as normal.  So therefore I was concerned why I would have so much back soreness.  Then I asked to have a copy of the report which now after reading your responses I believe could be alot of problems.  Was wanting to see if anyone had some good excercies for this problem to try on my own.  Thanks

i agree totally w haitran. It sounds like it is a muscular issue and that you should et better with proper care--- mostly SELF CARE-- trigger point release, sproper strengthnng of the back, and proper stretching.... tight hip flexors can easily cause back pain.

The main reason for your back pain could be the scoliosis. Scoliosis often lead to altered biomechanic of upper and lower vertebrae. As result this increase risk of surrounding muscle fatigue and strain. In addition, scoliosis prone you to early joint degeneration because the joint wear out much quicker due to the altered biomechanic of the spine (eg: narrowing of disc spaces)

And yes, depending the severity of your problem and the lifestyle + posture + age, a scoliosis and narrowing of disc space will give you alot of discomfort.

To treat your condition, you will need manual therapy to treat the muscle and you need to comply to long-term back strengthening exercise. You will need to see an Osteopath, Physiotherapist for further examination of your problem.
