Spinal Fusion and Pregnancy

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a couple questions I have. I am 34 and just had a spinal fusion to L4-L5 in June. First of all I was wondering how long the screws would continue to bother me. They are so uncomfortable I do not even sit back against a chair most of the time. As well, I was wondering if anyone knows about spinal fusions and future pregnancy. I know the curvature of the spine changes during pregancy and my spine has been fused in one of the main weight bearing areas, would this mean that it would be unwise to get pregnant and carry a child full term in the future? I was curious because I was pregnant and due to fears that the pregnancy would break the fusion I terminated and feel really guilty about it now.

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

Hey there! I was wondering what part of your back is fused? At 17  I was involved in a car accident that resulted in spinal fractures of the L1 and L2 as well as dislocation and compression injury. They took a bone graft from my hip and fused the spine.
I am now 23 and trying to conceive and honestly absolutley terrified. I want children very badly though. Please feel free to email me and tell me of your experience!!!!

Hi, wow.  I am wondering all the same things.  I'm 37, and had the exact same surgery (L4/L5 fusion) one month ago.  I'd be interested in learning more about the healing time and what pregnancy is like after a fusion.

After my spinal fusion, I had to wait a full year for the pieces of bone that they put in the spaces to fuse around the metal and become solid. I was only 13 at the time so I never had to worry about babies. Now, I have three kids. Pregnancy is uncomfortable no matter what, but I can tell you that it was worth it. If you have any more questions, just let me know......sadly, I know more about this than I'd like to.
