pain that spreads

A few days ago I developed a nasty pain in my lower abdomen. This lasted for about a day. It felt like the worst period type cramps ever. By the next day it was spreading to my lower back. The pain in stomach is now gone, but the pain in lower back ( now spreading up to mid back) is unreal. I can't take a full breath without doubling over in pain. I can't sit, stand, walk, lay down, or anything in between without being in excruciating pain.
I don't recall lifting anything heavy ( except my toddler, which I do every day) or falling, or doing anything else that would caused this pain to come on suddenly.
I have had a cough on and off for a few weeks, coughing up yellow sputum...but if it was something to do with my lungs you would think that the pain would be in the upper back.
The only thing I can think of is about a week ago my little guy was climbing on the back of the couch and landed on my back...hurt for about half hour but went away...but like I said, this pain started in my lower abdomen/pelvic area.
Anyone else ever get this? If so what was the cause?

First, some background: six months ago I fell down the stairs and hurt my back in a way that causes pain after 4-6 hours of sleep, which is I believe the general problem of everybody on this forum.

About a week ago, I began shifting to a polyphasic sleep schedule, and I haven't been woken up by back pain yet.  http://lifehacker.com/5866905/polyphasic-sleep-cycles-trick-your-body-into-needing-less-sleep is the page that introduced me to the idea, and any of the different systems seem to be effective in eliminating the pain.

I am personally shifting to the Uberman schedule, but have accidentally done the Everyman on several days.  Even the core sleep is minimal enough that my back doesn't have time to get triggered.
