Hawaii Ironman 70.3 done next up a Marathon - keeping happy by being healthy

Hey Gang,

I'm using exercise as my main treatment for managing my bipolar. Using events to keep me focussed and hopefully inspire others to try and exercise when possible.

Next up is a Marathon in October, never done one of these.

Bipolar people can do anything :0) Stay healthy groovers.

Big hugs

Calf still healing, sadly not going to be back ready in time for the Marathon.  Thats ok, I've signed up to do an Olympic Distance Triathlon in a months time as well so can look forward to that instead. :0)

Enjoying the rest and recovery at the moment :0)

Hope you are all well, and exercising when you can!

Good Weekend training, went for a long ride Saturday then out partying Saturday night. Feeling hypomanic and hungover, I went for a 20km run on Sunday followed by a non wetsuit swim in the bay brrrrrrr. Great for a hangover and the run helped burn of the energy of the hypomania.

Biggest concern for me at the moment is avoiding injuries so I've started running on as much cushy grass as I can find.  Seems to be working well, went running this morning along the beach it was great fun. Out training on windtrainers tonight then out with some friends. Have also changed my diet to a portion controlled lite n easy program. More for the easy than the lite, but hey won't be upset losing some kg's. Lost 3 kg already which I'm wrapped about. Been training for 3 years and have lost very little weight.  Looks like I've finally found a good combination.

2 months to go to the Marathon :0)

Sure does help, makes a massive difference especially swimming for me.

Recommend joining a club, bigger the better, also helps provide a support network when you're down. But most importantly training in a group makes it easier to go and easier to learn.

Just be careful if you are taking lithium at the same time as it can put a fair bit of pressure on your kidneys.

Experiment with exercising, I've fended of mixed episodes riding my bike on a windtrainer while listening to chill out music.

I also checked my vitamin levels and noticed I was deficient in a lot of areas

Hi BP2Professional, you are amazing! I must say. Thanks for showing us what's possible with our illness.
I was only diagnosed wit
h BP2 a month ago at age 33. I was so in denial and felt my life was wasted or such a loser. Now, I am on Lamotringine and not really planning to take it for too long. Does exercising with much intensity help on taking off medication?

Thanks for answering. Good luck with your training and competition.

that's wonderful; exercise was always my way of helping control my moods also and I suggest it to others quite often...right now my physical health problems won't allow me to exercise and it's impacted so much of my life

keep up the great work and good luck on staying healthy

Hey thanks for the support, just a quick note, although I'm not on any serious medication at the moment doesn't mean I wouldn't be if it was needed.  Medication as needed is my motto, still have large periods of anxiety from time to time and don't hesitate to take Xanax. So don't go off your meds kiddies. Not a good plan :0) Exercising does help control the moods drastically for me.

Ironman is hardcore, that's very impressive. Let us know how it's going. I still take meds but I think the dose would be higher if I did not exercise. Exercise has a big impact on improving my mood.
