bipolar and surgery

I'm getting quite extensive mouth surgery on Tuesday.  I will not be able to talk or smile for a month (fun, fun).  Anyways, I heard, I think, somewhere a while ago that prescription pain medication can effect someone who is bipolar.  Maybe this was a figment of my imagination but I would like to know for sure.  Does anyone know anything?

Spoke with my psychiatrist about medications and stuff.  They are putting my on oxycodone for 10-14 days.  He said I shouldn't have anything to worry about except for getting euphoric with the drug.  I will still be taking my regular medications so I should be fine.  It is an outpatient procedure so they will not be controlling my meds.

I just had surgery a couple weeks ago & that whole process made me crash, badly. The pain meds, Loratib, morophine, phenergan, & Pepcid made me full blown manic. The worst part is they didn't give me anything as far as my regular meds. They did give me a 1/2 dose of Depakote the last day I was there, which was a WEEK!
good luck! Tres

Thanks, I wasn't sure.  I asked the surgeon who reviewed all my medications and of course he said it was fine medically.  I'm sure he doesn't know jack about making me manic or depressed.  I will call my doc tomorrow and find out and just let him know what's going on.  Thanks

Yes there could be an effect and certainly an interaction with your current medications. Make sure the oral surgeon and all doctors involved are aware of your full prescription regimen and go through any potential interactions as well as voicing your concern of any of them worsening mania or depression.
