Yeah Amy !!! I am glad you went with the lawyer. Hang in there sweetie.
Wendy
I got denied the first time, then I appealed it and got it the second time. I had a lawyer. Which I am very thankful for. I was having a manic episode and couldn't seem to fill out the paper work once and my lawyer got me an extention on it while I was in the hospital. If it wasn't for my lawyer they might have droped my case. My lawyer got a little over $3,000 of my back pay, but thats ok considering I may not have gotten it without him.
Yes I agree with the other post but also keep track of when the hearing date is in regards to finding appropriate representation because the hearing can be adjourned (postponed) until appropriate representation is found. I've already posted about independent living centers some of which do free non legal representation as per Social Security appeals. There is one in every county of every state. Also there are specific numbers that can tell you where you can find free legal representation such as the legal aid society. Depending paid representation in the early stages of appeal may not be needed but appropriate representation is.
I was denied my first time because I applied by myself. I then got an SSI lawyer who did all the work for me and got me the benefits I so needed. I gave him a percentage of my benefits check for payment. I went to a good SSI lawyer not to the guy on tv and billboards. I have told this to others and it worked for them. If you do not have a lawyer now then find one and let them take over. If you have one then switch to a better one. Make sure you have a psychiatrist and therapist evaluation of you and any hospital notes etc. Good luck to you. WendyJones
