medications

Four years ago I started seeing a new doc who started prescribing opiates for the treatment of my bipolar. I suffer mostly with the depressive side of the condition, is this an unusual med to be on for bipolar? Has anyone else been treated with or heard of this treatment??

I did do some research last night on this subject and in the 50s opiates were widely used for manic depression and there have also been recent hush hush experiments with opiates and depression.  I was taking oapiates for a while and i tell u i was happier then but maybe cuz i was a little buzzed.  but i functioned fine.  where are u from? and what kind of dr do u go to?  is it ur pcp or psyc dr?

thanks girl, glad to meet you. I have been off the opiates(oxycodon, oxycontin) for the past 6 months when I lost my insurance. I now have it back but Dr. Cochran is not takeing any new patients. So I'm kinda floating by on my nurontin. I also take adderall for ADHD and valium to help with panic attacks. I am now seeing just a pyschiatrist. Who doesnt treat bi-polar with opiates. He believes that it was working for me but is not familiar enough with the recent studies. I can't take anti-depessants because they wire me up because of the adderall I guess. It also addressed my pain that I suffer with due to lupus and osteopenia. Dr. Cocrah has 2 books out there on his case studies. And he has a web page if you'ld like to check him out. Dr. Robert Cochran. His main title is Pain managment specialist but his studies are the field of opiates as a treatment for depression, ADHD, bi-polar and other conditions. His books are a must read if the standard meds are not giving you the results you are looking for.

Yes that seems odd, I haven't heard of doctors doing that either but if it works and you don't get addition issues then it is good. Are you on mood stabilizer as well or just the opiates?  I would ask what research or why he/she put you on it? As i believe it would defiantly be an off label use for bipolar disorder?

Let me know how you get on
Best of luck

I have never heard of a dr giving that however i think it could actually work.  However those are very addictive how long have you been on opiates?  what exactly are u taking?  I used to take vicodin and thought they actually thought they worked very well for depression but like i said very addictive.
let me know how things are going
