Mirena to Skyla effectiveness

I had the Mirena inserted in September 2012 (I was 22). In September 2017, I couldn't get a replacement due to some insurance issues, so I kept the Mirena in until I got everything sorted out. During the next 5 months, my husband and I used condoms just in case. So now February 2018 during the same office visit, I had the Mirena removed and Skyla inserted. I was surprised to hear my doctor say to use other contraceptives for another month. I'm just finding it hard to believe we need to wait that long since I kept the Mirena up until two minutes before Skyla. I think 1 week is understandable, but a month just seems overly cautious for my situation. I guess I just want another opinion. Thank you.
