What are your experiences with Mirena

I'm considering going on Mirena because I know I wouldn't be able to keep up with pills and I definitely don't want anything in my arm. Do you think Mirena is a good choice?

I have had a couple of Mirenas since 2011. A couple of them fell out but it was unrelated to the device and due to other issues.  I got mine because of heavy bleeding and it took care of that for me. I no longer have to pack a second suitcase when I go on vacation just for period supplies. I can get by with the lightest pads, which will fit in my regular luggage.  I'm going to keep getting a new mirena whenever this one expires because it's the only thing that has helped me with my heavy bleeding.

The insertion part hurt a lot, I'm not going to lie. But it only lasts a couple of seconds and then you're ok. It's a lot like getting your ears pierced. Getting your ears pierced hurts a lot for a few seconds and then it stops hurting and you're fine.  Same thing with Mirena. Just take a lot of ibuprofen before hand (I think I took like 1000 mg) and you'll be fine.

That was the main reason I went on it! My periods were SO light. Light enough where if I didn't wear a tampon, I wouldn't even see blood on my underwear, only when I wiped. It helped with the cramps a lot too!

Okay thank you! I also have really horrible period cramps and very heavy periods. I heard it helps a lot with that.

I had Mirena for 2 years then got it removed. I was 16 when I got it, and I bled very lightly for 12 weeks. But after that, I didn't bleed at all for 9 months! It was great! But then I got into this bad fog that I couldn't seem to get out of. And I started having pains so I went to the emergency room to have it removed. Well, this particular ER doesn't Consider IUD removal an emergency.... I finally got into a doctor and felt better almost instantly after. My body can't handle the level of hormones that it has. I can't even take a regular pill, I have to take a low dose estrogen. It's super convenient, so if you can handle the hormones, I would definitely say go for it! It's just not for everyone (:
