IUD- Mirena discharge

I have had a Mirena IUD for 2 years. The past 2 months I have had frequent watery discharge.  I went to the doctor and he said that the IUD can give you all kinds of strange discharge.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I had to wear a liner everyday and it was just a pain in the neck.  The discharge would smell after intercourse and I asked the Dr. and she checked and made sure everything was ok and it was.  I had the mirena taken out after about a month and went with the 10 year becasue I had too many side effects hair loss, weight gain, depression, no sex drive.  Since I had it taken out I am back to normal and no discharge.

You are not alone. I just had mine removed last week because of the constant discharge and bacterial infections from my body trying to fight the Mirena off.

I just got mine on Dec. 7th. I just had a baby 2 months ago and am exclusively breastfeeding. I thought that breastfeeding was supposed to supress your cycle, but since I have the Mirena I got a period about a week ago. It was much heavier than my periods used to be, and today is day number 7 and the spotting is starting to get lighter. If i'm going to have heavy long periods like this, then I'm thinking about having it removed. Also I was informed that you could have light spotting in between your periods. That means spotting everyday and having to wear a liner everyday.

I have had mine since June 06, and I have been having all kinds of irregular discharge. I dont have cycles anymore but my breast swell at the time i should have them. I have had the same sexual partner and have had lots of visits to my pcp and ob/gyn to clear up the situation. They just kept checking me for std's and infections. I am fed up with this because it is very embarrassing!! Im having it removed ASAP...If im having all this nasty discharge, I dont need bc anyway because i cant or dont want to even have sex!!!

I'm having the same problem. Had mine for 2 years now and have the watery discharge on a regular basis. It is such a pain to deal with and has caused some issues between my husband and I. I generally produce too much discharge during sex and it has been a problem for both of us. I also seem to leak a lot when I'm working out. My OBGYN said it was normal and is a side effect, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I'm thinking I may go have it removed and go back on the pill.

I had the same thing happen for about the first 6 months. It is a pain to deal with, but it does eventually pass. The sex drive thing, kind of comes and goes. At least it has with me. But the spotting and cramping eventually did go away. Hope that helps!

Hi I was wondering about the comment you made about the increase in lubrication during sex and it causing problems with your husband. I am experiencing the same thing and was wondering if you still have your Mirena in??

Hello,
Yes, I still have my Mirena in. I had problems with too much lubrication during sex even before I had the Mirena put in. It has only gotten worse since I had it put in. I tend to have leaking problems when I work out, when I first wake up in the morning sometimes and when I start getting turned on, it gets really bad really fast. I'm thinking that removing the IUD will help. At least I hope so. It's getting pretty frustrating and although I enjoy skipping my periods, it's not worth the hassle of the leaking. I've heard many of the same stories from women who have had the same problem.

I am currently having the same problem with all the abnormal discharge. I had my IUD put in last October and cont. bleed for a month straight. Finally I got fed up with it and called my OB/GYN. He told me to take Naproxen 500mg BID for a month. Since my uterus was trying to reject or expell the IUD. It worked wonders but now I have this weird discharge but I have noticed that if I take the Naproxen 500mg BID on a regular basis it does help and sometimes even goes away. Maybe this will help some of you.

I have had a mirena for  about 1 year and a half- I have just began to experience the smelly discharge- it is extremely bad when I  work out in the mornings- I thought something was horribly wrong with me-- it is so embarrasing- I like to take walks during the day at work but when i return the smelly discharge is back and I want to just crawl under my desk- not to mention I have gained 35 pounds since I had this thing put in- I want to have it out immediately- hopefully that will help with weight loss- (and the smell)- will talk to OBGYN 2moro- Im just walking in- thanks everybody for your comments- I thought it was just me:-)

I have had my Mirena in for over 3 yrs and have found I have a smelly discharge, irregular periods, spotting all the time, stomach cramps and sweating. The most concerning issue for me is about 6 months ago I noticed  my nipples were extremely itchy, Onfurther checking I found that I had a green discharge from one nipple. After further testing I was advised it was just an infection of one of my ducts. my youngest is 9yrs old so one would think that nipple discharge would have been over and done with by now. I still have the discharge from my nipple and wonder whether this is one of the uncommon  side effect. I spoke to a girlfriend recently she's had her Mirena in for  a year or so and she has a green discharge from one nipple and a milky discharge from the other. Is the link we both have the Mirena IUD ? is there anyone else out there with a green nipple discharge & using a Mirena IUD ?

I am so glad that I am not alone!  My IUD is coming out as soon as possible after hearing all of your stories.  I have been having the discharge for about 4 months or so, thought it was a bacterial infection here and there, but now I am just tired of it!  It is definitely abnormal and just nasty!  Thanks to you all, I am getting mine out!!  It has been nice for a while, no period and all, but I would much rather have a period than this discharge any day!!!!

I thought I was alone on having this smelly discharge, your comments have bn very helpful!!!! I am going to try that medication that "ORNURSE" suggested and hopefully that will help my smelly discharge as well.. I havent had the weight gain or the green nipple discharge, but I have had occasional spotting and abdominal cramps; but I must say that the smelly discharge is by far my most annoying & shameful side effect of all.. Everyday when I get off of work my husband tells me that I smell like a bag of dicks & I get sick of hearing that, as if I cant smell myself.. As far as my sexdrive, it has slowed down DRASTICALLY, in fact it has damn near stopped!!!! But every once in a blue moon I feel the need for my husband to put it on me LMAO.... But thanks to you all for sharing your stories and letting me know that Im not alone....

i never had a problem with a odor but i did have a issue with mood swings, hair loss, weight gain and acne.  then once i hit about the 4 yr mark started spotting the brown discharge almost daily for what felt like forever.  it was causing so many issues that may 08 i finally had it taken out.  havent gone back to complete normal yet, still have a bit of hair loss and acne but not nearly as bad as before.  i am ttc now so it is nice that after 4 months off it, my cycles are FINALLY getting regulated.  i had a 39, 27,25 and then a 30 day cycle since Merina had been taken out.

i would NEVER recommend Merina to ANYONE.  if i have another baby i am gonna have them tie my tubes while they are in there...i am 35 and the next will be #4 so it will be time.

I've had Mirena in for a little over a month and a half.
I don't know what to think of it. I haven't stop spotting since it was put in and I've been wearing a pantyliner everyday. But its different, I have clumps of skin tissue on my liner. Has anyone had this same problem? I want to see my family doctor, but hes male and frankly I'm a little embarrassed about it. There no smell or pain associated with it but it concerns me.

vanessa i would swollow pride and go see a doc.  if you are not comfortable going to your family doctor look up a number for a female OB/GYN.  but get it checked out....the IUD could be messed up in there and causing damage that could cause trouble later.  best be embarrassed and safe a lifetime of trouble

i'm so happy I found all this cos I've nearly gone outta ma mind as far as this discharge thing is concerned. My biggest fear has always been that if I could smell it this bad, can other pple do the same? Are we sure if Mirena can make u smell this bad, it doesnt wreak some serious havoc in our systems? cant take mine out though, oo scared to get pregnant again and I dont hav any discipline for pills. Is there sumthg to be done to improve the odor?
