Birth control is not an exact science it just depends on your body and your hormones. Typically it takes about 90 days for your body to adjust to a hormonal change. I got the depo shot about 2 months ago. I had been having problems with having long, drawn out, but light periods. A few days after I got the shot I finally stopped bleeding. Unfortunately about a month later I started again and have not stopped since. OMG I am going insane, my boyfriend's not so happy about it either! I've been drinking this Women's Moon Cycle Tea by yogi (yogitea.com) It helps with the cramping and the craziness but has yet to stop my bleeding. Also the tea contains Phytoestrogens which I am somewhat concerned will interfere with the shot. The Depo shot is all progesterone. I doubt it would be enough to really interfere.
Anyway in conclusion, there is no such thing as a "normal reaction" talk to your doctor and definately be concerned if your symptons persist for more than 90 days. Other than that. we'll just have to stick it out.
Good luck, i know I need it too.

Hello,
I am also 20 years old. When I got on the depo in DEC. on the 11Th 2008, I had non stop bleeding and I started bleeding from my butt. (not to be gross or scare you)
I don't know if you are sexually active or if you know much about the depo shot. On many different sites you see people fighting over the answers you get.
But if you are sexually active please still use a different type of protection other than the shot. I have 2 beautiful children and I just recently found out I'm pregnant again I'M about 3 and a half months. Yes I got pregnant while being on the shot. My shot wasn't due till March 11Th but I decided since my bleeding was crazy I wanted to stop. The last time I had my period was April 2ed it started and ended the 16th and then i had spotting on the 20th-23ed. Here I had 4 home pregnancy tests negative I had 3 blood tests negative. I talked to the Dr because I was having this butterfly movement in my stomach like i had in the beginning of my pregnancy with my daughter  and it sure as hell wasn't gas. He had told me while being on the depo there is a chance of still getting pregnant and most young women do. They said the reason it was not showing up in the blood work and the urine was due to the depo shot. It brings down your HGC hormones in your body and that's way a huge number of people don't know they are pregnant. Unfortunitly, the baby ends up dying before people even know they are pregnant. I was told this by a pennsylvania state specialist in the department of OBGYN. That doctor was the best in the state.
My best friend was on the depo for 2 years and she didnt know she was pregnant until her water broke and the baby was premature by 2 months. That is also a side effect from the depo. Premature birth. There are a lot of risks that the Doctors dont tell you about the depo that are more dangerous than the pill.

The shot is no longer even an option at my doctor's office!!! They were having too many issues with women reporting severe bleeding and even fertility issues following the use of the shot.

I have taken the depo shot twice. And I heard that it takes like 4 times for your body to get used to it. I got my second shot feb. 12th So my doctor told me to wait 2 weeks after I got it before having intercourse and we didn't. My shot was supposed to end mid april so I thought I was supposed to get my period normaly. I got it at the beginning of may but it was super light and only lasted 2 days so I thought maybe its because of the bc so I said ill wait till I get my period.. it is now june 20th and I haven't gotten it at all. But I've taken 2 testts and they both came out negative.. could I be pregnant?

Hi,i had my first and last depo shot 7 month ago and since then i have noot stop bleeding.I have read a lot of complains about depo shot and same problems as mine UNTIL today when i went to GP  and she even suggested that it could be cervical cancer !!!Can you imagine!I have done my smear test just before depo shot, everything was fine and 1 week after the shot i started spotting and bleeding till now.So she scared me right off.Now i am waiting for my  gynecologist appointment to come through.I am so worried at the moment.I am sure it is because of Depo Provera  AND NOT CANCER.I told her that i have read a lot of reviews of woman who had the sam on going bleeding for months, but she kind of ignored that.
I just wonder how will they stop that bleeding? When it is going to stop?Plus i have bad mood swings like on my period (i have very bad PMS syndrom )uhhh
Sorry for the long post and probably with a loot of mistakes but i am not English and tried my best:)
regards.

I was on Depo for about a year and my first period lasted about 10 days and then it stopped. My next period was light and only lasted 2 days and then I never had one again for the rest of that year. I went off of it and about a 6 weeks later I had a period that lasted for a about two months but then I went back to normal. I went back on the shot today while on my period, so I'm hoping that it will stop my periods again completely. I know that taking the pill and not taking the reminder pills, just going straight into another a pack without using the non-hormone pills will make your period stop as well. I've done it that way but pills give me leg cramps and Depo does not so I went back to Depo.

I started my depo somewhere around last April or may, and I have not stopped bleeding for more than one or two days maybe twice, since then. I hate it. My sex life is horrible bc who feels sexxc when thy are always bleeding. I also gained about 50 lbs, and its like pulling my own teeth out to try and lose weight. I am officially DONE with this pill and  its bs...and cant wait for my system to detox!

okay i took the depo shot about a month ago.
i have been bleeding constantly, but my doctor gave me estrogen pills to counter act the progesterone that is in the depo shot. it's decreasing the flow. i have not gained weight because i keep up with the same eating habits, and try and ignore the extra hormonal levels that it gives off.. crying, depression, you get the idea. go to your obgyn SPECIALIST, who knows about the depo, get prescribed estrogen. they can increase the dosage slowly if necessary. also with all this bleeding, your doctors should have checked your iron levels. you should be prescribed iron pills, it can cause constipation so make sure you take a fiber pill with it. i take both pills at night.

good luck!

I got a depo shot in November of 2010 and never went back to get the second shot, I had been bleeding brown blood nonstop since December and I started trying to conseve on April 10th supost to ovulate that week, but I never had a real peroid since the shot or I didnt know because of the nonstop spotting but I belive I had a period on the 5th of April. But on the 12th the spotting suddenly stoped and hasnt started back. Could this mean Im pregnant or is it still to early to tell?

I do know that timing has a lot to do with your period and taking the shot. My dr always recommends taking the shot while on your period. If you take it while not on your cycle this could cause the continous bleeding.

I received my first Depo shot in November '10 and within days my period started... It is now May '11 and I'm still on that same period. The flow alternates between moderate and heavy. I've contacted my doctor and nurse numerous times about my concerns and I'm always faced with the same "advice".. To stick it out and get another shot because MAYBE it'll go away.. Well, I've been having constant mood swings, no energy, dehydrated, consistently feeling nauseous, aching joints, and so on.. All my doctor will do is test me for anemia and if I'm pregnant..

I'm due for another shot this month and was seriously considering changing birth control.. Any suggestions on what I should try? I'm sick of having my period for 6 months straight now and feeling miserable.
